<t h H O CN L O v H fc _ q by David Lea £ Oakville Beaver Staff Salvation Army needs a big boost before Dec. 23 "We've got families who have come out and together they stand by our Christmas kettles." Robinson noted the local Salvation Army food bank assisted 1,385 people during 2016. The group also helps the needy in the community through clothing voucher programs, furniture referrals, summer camping programs, income tax clinics and back to school support, among other things. The Oakville Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program, which provides food and toys to families who otherwise would go without, served around 400 families including around 600 children in 2016. Hennessy has emphasized that if the Kettle Campaign does not raise the necessary funds the charity' s ability to help those in need will be lessoned. Kettles are located at Oakville Place Mall, Walmart, the Real Canadian Superstore, the Dundas Street Canadian Tire, the Lakeshore Road Fortinos Ltd., the South Oakville Centre and the Cornwall Road, Oak Park Drive and Rebecca Street LCBOs. Those unable to make it to a kettle can still donate by mail/in person at 1225 Rebecca St., Oakville, Ont., L6L 1Z1. The office is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to noon., and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Donations can also be made online at www. fillthekettle.com or by telephone at 1-800-SALARMY (725-2769). a CD Oakville's Salvation Army is asking residents to ~a dig just a little bit deeper as it enters the home (Z of its fundraising goal. As of Dec. 9, just 39 per cent of that figure, $46,324, has been collected. Shannon Robinson, coordinator for the Salvation Army's Community and Family Services program, says organizers are not panicking just yet because the start of the campaign is traditionally slow. That said, the campaign is critically important to charity's ability to help the less fortunate in the Oakville community and with less than two weeks until the campaign' s end Salvation Army staff want to see that gap narrowed quickly. "This is our only fundraiser in the community and it is where we gather all of our money to keep our 12 months of operations going," said Oakville Salvation Army Corps Officer/Pastor, Major Mike Hennessy. "We don't have government dollars that support our programs. This is all community driven from our Christmas effort." Robinson noted every little bit helps and said donations of just 25 cents or 10 cents add up in the end. Oakville's Salvaton Army is far short of its $118,000 fundraising goal for its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign, which runs through Dec. 23. | Metroland file photo While donations are greatly needed, people cannot donate at the kettles if there is no one to watch over them. That is why the Oakville Salvation Army is also putting out another call for volunteers. There are a total of 4 4 4 shifts available between now and Dec. 23. Currently the charity only has enough volunteers to cover 183 of them. "We want to really express our appreciation to the volunteers who have already come forward," said Hennessy.
