White Christmas followed by frigid temperatures: TWN by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff d Oakville residents can look forward to a white Christmas and then some. The Oakville- based The Weather Network, a division of Pelmorex Media Inc., released its Holiday Snow Report Wednesday, Dec. 20 -- predicting plenty of the white stuff for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. "I am optimistic that w e will have a white Christmas despite all appearances to the contrary right now," said Weather Network Meteorologist D oug Gillham. "For Oakville, expect 7-12 cm of snow Thursday night (Dec. 21) into Friday (Dec. 22). We will likely see som e freezing drizzle on Friday. That will be a messy day, but we will get enough snow that I think we will keep m ost of that into Christmas." Gillham said there might also be significant snowfall Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But that' s not all. "We are heading into an extended period of wintery weather where, from Boxing Day through the first week of January, frigid weather will dominate," said Gillham. "People will remember this as the winter with the frigid holiday season," added the meteorologist. During this period, Gillham said, Oakville Oakville residents can anticipate a white Christmas followed by a frigid holiday period as first snow, and then bitter temperatures pay a visit for the holidays. | Metroland file photo residents can expect many daytime highs of around -10C and temperatures falling into the -20Cs and -30Cs with the windchill at night. Residents travelling to ski country during this period, whether south to Buffalo or in Ontario to Collingwood or Barrie, should expect snow squalls. "A lot of people like to go skiing or go snowmobiling or do a lot of outdoor activities during the holidays and it is going to be very cold Boxing Day right through N ew Year' s ," said Gillham. "Anyone travelling needs to be aware there w ill often be the typical lake effect snow squalls in the snow-belt areas. The concern is you take w hiteouts and dangerous windchills and that gives you a very dangerous set-up." People with travel plans are advised to get forecast updates before beginning their journeys. Gillham is also recommending those travelling, especially through rural areas, during the frigid period following Boxing Day, take a winter survival kit or at least a blanket with them in case of a vehicle breakdown.
