The spotlight shone briefly on Bronte Beach last week with the filming of X-Men, an action adventure movie based on the hit Marvel comic book series. Although filming at Bronte Beach was rained out on Wednesday and moved back to a Toronto studio, the scenes will be shot some time in the near future explained film publicist Joe Everett. "We had to reschedule because of bad weather on Wednesday and move back to Toronto. Rescheduling is still to be announced," said Everett. This 20th Century Fox production features many well known stars, including Halle Berry (Flinstones, Bulworth), Patrick Stewart (Star Trek The Next Generation), Ian McKellan (Gods and Monsters, Apt Pupil), Dougray Scott (Deep Impact), and Ray Park (Star Wars Episode One). Newcomer Tyler Mane and supermodel Rebecca Rominjn-Stamos are also in the film. Bryan Singer, who worked on The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil, is directing X-Men. The Bronte Beach scene involves a dol phin-type creature that mutates into a human being as it travels from water to land, shock ing beach users during the transformation. A special effects water scene will also be filmed on the east walkway of Bronte Beach. These are the only scenes scheduled for an Oakville shoot. The rest of the movie will be shot at a Toronto studio and at seven closedset locations in and around the Toronto area. Filming just began last Monday and Everett is tight-lipped about details for now, including the main story line and what stars will be in town. "Its too early to get into the specifics. We don't want to give away too many surprises," he said. The X-Men Marvel comic book series is based on a group of mutant human beings. They are characters who have mutated over time and developed incredible powers in the process. "The characters in the movie will be famil iar to people who are familiar with the Marvel comic book," explained Everett. Bronte Harbour was chosen for this partic ular X-Men scene because the location suits the scene as the director sees it and there is ample space to accommodate a movie crew. Last Monday, a set decoration crew began preparing the beach for filming by removing residue build-up from the water, raking and cleaning and setting up a lifeguard stand. X-Men is due to be released in theatres on June 30, 2000.
