Rompin' Ronnie Haw kins skipped into the spotlight supported by Robbie Lan e and the Disciples. The way the crowd yelled - it' s no wonder the boys are the number one group in Toronto. Backstage after their performance the boys were quite cheerful and easy to interview al though they said they had been on the road all night. Canadian newcomer Terry Black also sang. This was his f i r s t appear a n c e before a Canadian audience and will be his only show this year on this conti nent. In a couple of weeks, he' s off on a European tour. Billy J. Kramer and the four Dakotas sang eight songs - almost bringing down the house. Then came the Angels - Lonnie Mack - and then emcee Jungle Jay Nel son started to introduce the stars of the show. He was drowned out with chants of "We want Gerry" . Almost as though in answer to the pleas - Gerry and the Pace makers bounded on stage and swung into the open ing number - " I Like It" . They followed wi th " Don' t Let the Sun Catch You Crying" , " I' m the One" , " How Do You Do It" , and " Slow Down" . Then the traditional thumbs-up sign and the group fled from the stage and into a waiting bus before they could be mobbed by fans. The director of the police department' s sa fety division, Sgt. A. J. Hooks returned from the National Safety Con gress and Exposition with many new ideas for the local safety pro gram. The meeting - the lar gest safety convention in the world - was held in Chicago. Twelve thou sand delegates from all the free countries atten ded. Sgt. Hooks attended all sessions of the con gress, but he took time to visit the Chicago Pol ice Department and get an inside look at its safety campaign. Patrol man Raymond Steele drove the Oakville sergeant to s e v e r a l schools. Sgt.'Hooks ad dressed the students, outlining his duties also giving them a brief les son on Canadian history, "It was surprising they knew so little about Can ada. They asked why I was not wearing my red uniform" , he said. F U L L Y U U m N T E E D A LU M IN U M = . His wife worried because he couldn' t get a worthwhile job. Her parents worri ed. But he didn' t! Let' s agree, then, that most of us just have to worry most of our lives. But worrying about one thing or the other is very different from being an over-anxious pessimis tic sort of person who worries not only about worrying matters but a- bout things there' s no sense or reason in wor rying about. An old aunt of mine used to call such a person " a dowly bowdy" - and that's i t . . . some body who never looks on the bright side and al ways sees the worst. Worry if you must, but, for heaven's sake, don't slip into an as surance that things are -going to get worse and worse. That' s misery for you - and for all who live with you. Put a cheerful cour age on. And every morn ing say to yourself - " This is the tomorrow 1 worried about yester- . day . . . and here I am!" ESSO WINTER SAFETY PROGRAM.
