The concert will feature Cariboo Moose, and proceeds will go to the Halton Centre for Child Care. Peter Tam, founder of Cariboo Moose and parent of one of the chil­ dren attending the child-care centre, applauds the work of the non-profit day-care facility, and claims it is one of the main reasons he chooses to live in Oakville. The songwriter is, by day, a com­ puter engineer whose office is in Cali­ fornia. Quite a commute for the father of three but, he says, "I like Oakville. Oakville is my favourite place. I like the day-care school, the people. You can't beat it," he says. "I've been all kinds of places and I really haven't found anything like this. It has community centres, the Y, the education is good, and we don't have guns - that's the main reason." Cariboo Moose, Tam's performing arts company, presents concerts for children in Ontario and California, changing its cast according to need. "Most of the cast is kids. The inter­ est range changes, and I change around," explains Tam. "I'm doing solo, on my own, and I like finding local people to do the rest." And right now he is looking for a female vocalist, preferably one who enjoys working with kids. Cariboo Moose recently cut its sec­ ond CD, The All Natural Kid, which, like the first, is all original songs. "It's half activity songs, half lulla­ bies. The Halloween concert at the region, adds Tam, will mix some of his original tunes with a few traditional favourites - Old MacDonald and Bingo, for example. "A lot of the songs are up-beat and familiar," Tam explains. "And there will be lots of activity songs. The con­ cert will be about half-an-hour. That's long enough for kids." Along with his upcoming Hal­ loween concert, Tam is already think­ ing of a third CD, one that focuses on special occasion songs. Angela Praysner, who is on the board at the child-care centre, says money raised at the Cariboo Moose Halloween/harvest concert will go to help purchase some new equipment for the centre. Kids are encouraged to get into the mood of the concert by wearing their Halloween costumes to the show. A prize will be awarded for best costume. Doors of the regional building on Bronte Road, just north of the QEW, will open at 10:30 a.m. Show time is at 11. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per family. Complimentary refreshments will be served. Art classes at Oakville Galleries begin today Oakville Galleries is getting ready for its art classes for children, which begin this week. The innovative Parent and Child program explores art with children ages 4 to 6, accompanied by an adult. Child and adult work together to nurture creativity from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The first session runs on Wednesdays from Oct. 6th to Nov. 10th. Session two is on Thursdays from Oct. 28th to Dec. 9th. Registrations is $105 or $90 for family members of Oakville Galleries. Saturdays Are for Making Art is for older children. Morning classes, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, are for ages 6 to 9 while ages 10 to 13 create from 1 to 3:30 p.m. There are three three-week sessions beginning Oct. 16th, Nov. 13th, and Jan. 22nd. Registration is $65 or $50 for family members. An evening Teen Art program for ages 14 and up takes place on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The 1999 session runs from Oct. 13th to Dec. 15th, while the second session begins in the new year and runs from Jan. 26th to March 29th. Programs for children aged 7 to 10 are also available on school PA. days - Oct. 8th, Dec. 3rd, and Feb. 4th - from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with daycare available from 4 to 5 p.m. Registration is $30 or $25 for family members.
