H e l p u s Police Board wants action on solving traffic problems B y Howard Moxel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Halton Regional Police Services Board has joined the growing chorus of those calling for substantial government support to address the region's mounting traffic woes. In response to problems associated with traffic growth and congestion, the board has passed a motion calling for immediate participation and funding contributions from both the federal and provincial governments to help with effective traf­ fic management. The board's motion made clear reference to a Region of Halton transportation study which iden­ tified that an additional $700 million annual investment to road infrastructure is necessary to meet current levels of service. Gasoline taxes collected by the by the federal government and Queen's Park total close to $2 bil­ lion a year, but neither level of government cur­ rently provides road subsidies. "Public health and safety are paramount," said Halton Hills regional councillor and Police Services Board member John Day, who proposed the motion. "Police and other emergency services are finding it increasingly difficult to respond to road traffic problems. The situation has become critical and we need to respond now." As a result of the board's motion, regional chair Joyce Savoline has invited Police Services Board chair Don Robinson to participate in upcoming discussions with Halton area MPs and MPPs. Last week Savoline also urged the Oakville and Burlington Chambers of Commerce to lobby the governments for more funding. After all, say regional staff, the economic toll of congestion and gridlock is now in the billions of dollars. About 50% of the gross provincial product and output is generated in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton-Wentworth areas. They account for 21% of the gross national product. Savoline also called upon the board secure sup­ port from similar boards across Ontario on this issue and to communicate the urgency of the mat­ ter directly to Halton's MPs and MPPs. Regional staff recently announced that Halton's population is expected to grow by about 200,000 by 2016, which will increase the number of cars from roughly 201,000 to 324,000. Halton residents currently make 750,000 car trips per day, a number that is estimated to jump to 1.2 million by 2016.
