There will be an estim ated 6,100 new cases o f prostate cancer diag nosed in Ontario in 1999 and an estim ated 1,550 men will die from the disease. The Society recom m ends that men over 50 discuss the potential benefits and risks of early detection testing using the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam with their doctors. W hat's new in prostate cancer research: The Canadian Cancer Society supports some of the most innova tive prostate cancer research in C anada through the Canadian Prostate Cancer Research Initiative-. This year, the Society contributed $1 .3-m illion over three years to fund five new research projects. Led by Dr. Michael Sherar and Dr. John Trachtenberg of the O ntario C ancer Institute, one of those new projects explores how thermal therapy could be used to wipe out prostate cancer cells while avoiding com plications associated with traditional treatm ents. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men after lung cancer. One in eight men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime, most likely after age 70.
