Wednesday October 13, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT T e r r a C o t t a l a n d s c a p e h a s i t s o w n a l l u r e You never know where a leisurely drive in the country on a brilliantly lit fall day may take you. If you're lucky you may find yourself way north of Oakville, scouring the "badlands" with dozens of other red clay-coated peo ple. You would never know they were there, a small dot on the southern Ontario landscape hidden away among the green of the forest in Caledon of all places. But if you're lucky you'll find this square kilometre or so area and explore it for hours on end. If you take highway 10 north of Brampton to Old Base Line Road you'll find it off to the side. You can see the red terra cotta shale gullies, smooth with wear and tear of hundreds of pairs of shoes and hiking boots, from the road where cars park in a long line. Word spreads about natural for mations, I suppose, as much as it does about gigantic sales and mall closures. It looked, in a way, like the day Eaton's announced it was over....a swarming of stores. On the afternoon we arrived, it looked vaguely like a sporting event or the entrance to a country fair. A long line of cars parked near the path leading onto the gullies with cars flanking both sides of the country road. But it wasn't the SkyDome or a country dance or even sorry old Eaton's that was drawing people to it: stretching out for a bit was land, a red dish bumpy piece of land where noth ing grows. In the midst of the natural green dense forest of the Caledon Mountain it stands out, stark and uncompromising. And it was attracting dozens of people to i t : snapping pictures, video taping or simply looking about in awe. A natural formation, if you can imag ine, attracting that kind of attention. And, you know, clambering about on the terra cotta shales that look like a sea of small hills, it's kind of nice to know that people will take the effort and time to visit a natural area. Cynics DIANE HART 1999 United Way of Oakville Campaign OUR GOAL $3.1 mil l ion United Way For more info: 845-5571 in this family comment, of course, that people will only do it on a day where everything is closed, everything valu able that is, malls being first on the list. But I don't know. Every storm, these terra cotta red with green-striped shale gullies deepen a little more. Today, you can literally not be seen in one of the "valleys", the perfect place for a game of hide and seek. But the days of running up and down the gullies freely is over. Unless you choose your time - early morning or sunset - you'll find yourself bump ing into a visitor who, like yourself, is trying to scale a gully or snap a photo of a toddler sliding down a side. Some of the gullies you have to step over, tight-rope like; others you can practi cally run along. One man was having a great time just running up and down the sides of them, mimicking the kids. After all, it isn't every day you see such a spectacular sight about 30 min utes northwest of Pearson airport. From a short distance away, it resembles a giant ant hill with all us ants scurrying about its striped, shale subsoil. A two year old was trying to find his way down a gully, his father giving him tips as the mother gingerly made her way down. Today, it is smooth and undulating and easy to traverse. My kids got completely red-coated, the terra cotta soil covering their old jeans and shoes. Tip: Wear old clothes. Leave the dog and the high heels at home. Bring lots of water. Finally, enjoy the spectacular beauty of this spot of land that will likely not be around for the next millennium.
