NEWS Award winning artist commissioned to create sculpture for Oakville Arena and Trafalgar Park DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com The Town of Oakville has selected Hamilton- based artist Laura Marot- ta to create a permanent outdoor sculpture as part of the redevelopment of Oakville Arena and Tra falgar Park. Marotta's sculpture Oc tagon for Trafalgar Park will be installed at the north entrance of the new community centre at 133 Rebecca St. It will be installed in the summer of 2018 and unveiled at the opening of the new facility in Septem ber. With its polished stain less steel surfaces and geometric lines, the large- scale structure is designed to be a social hub that in vites exploration and re flection by visitors as they move around the piece and view it from its many angles. "The new community centre will be a popular gathering place for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds and Laura's sculpture is designed to be accessible and engaging for everyone," said Sarah Douglas-Murray, the town's senior manager of cultural services. "Public a rt brings peo ple together and sparks conversation in the com munity and we're very ex cited to bring this unique sculpture to the neigh bourhood." Town staff said the town will pay Marotta $90,000 to create the sculp ture. An independent selec tion committee made up of visual arts professionals, community representa tives and town staff select ed Marotta's sculpture af- ter evaluating 47 applica tions submitted by profes sional Canadian artists and invited a shortlist of five applicants to submit more detailed proposals. Marotta is a master of fine arts graduate from the University of Guelph. Her artwork has been featured in curated exhi bitions at the McMaster Museum of Art, the Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Art Gallery of Burling ton and the Cotton Facto ry in Hamilton. The committee of Ham ilton's Supercrawl festival also commissioned her to produce a public sculp ture for the 2014 event. She received the Estab lished Artist Award from the City of Hamilton and Emerging Artist Grants from the Ontario Arts Council. Her sculpture Bead Maze won the West Har- bour GO Station Public Art Competition commis sioned by Metrolinx and the City of Hamilton. For more information about her work, visit lau- ra-marotta.com.
