Fire Prevention Week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, an immense, destructive fire which burned more than 2,000 acres in 27 hours, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Just where the fire started has created a lot of speculation over the years. One popular legend is that Mrs. Catherine O 'Leary was milking her cow when the animal kicked over a lamp, setting the O 'Leary's bam on fire and starting the destructive chain of events. In 1911, on the 40th anniversary of this tragic fire, the Fire M arshals Association of North America (FM ANA), the oldest m em bership section of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sponsored the first National Fire Prevention Day as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. In 1922, this was expanded to Fire Prevention Week. The first national Fire Prevention Day was held in Canada in 1919, and the earliest known provincial proclama­ tion in Ontario was in 1916. Fire Prevention week was first proclaimed by the Governor-General in 1923. From the beginning, it was obvious that a united effort between Canada and the United States would be more effective, and both countries have always supported a common date at federal, provincial, state and munici­ pal levels. The Saturday ending Fire Prevention Week is Fire Service Recognition Day when appreciation is expressed for the many public services provided by members of the Canadian Fire Services.
