THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 1, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER THE GREAT OAKVILLE RESIDENTS have the opportunity to win great local prizes in a free draw sponsored by local merchants and national sup porters. The Oakville Fire Department w ill hold the draw on October 9th, at 3:00 p.m. at Oakville Place, from all the escape plans and submit them to the Council for the provincial draw. ONTARIO RESIDENTS also have the opportunity to win one o f four $500 gift certificates from The Home Depot. Each fire department w ill also select one escape plan to be sub mitted to NFPA's "The Great * Escape" grand prize contest. The NFPA w ill randomly select one winner to receive a trip for four to Walt Disney World in Florida. Using the grid to the right, create a floor plan o f your home. Stick the original on your refrigerator or a place where everyone can see it, and make copies for other rooms in your home. Hang on to this grid. If you're the grand prize winner of NFPA's home fire escape planning contest, you'll need it to receive your trip to Walt Disney World. Here are some tips to help you and your family develop a home escape plan and prepare for "The Great Escape". Using the home escape grid on this page, mark all the windows and doors on the plan. • Plan TWO ways out of every room. The FIRST way should be the door, the SECOND way could be a window. Make sure the windows open easily. Doors and windows with security bars should have quick releasing devices that everyone can operate. If you live in a multi-level building, in case of fire use the stairs. NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR. • Agree on a meeting place in front of your home where everyone will meet. Mark your meeting place on the escape plan. • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in, or near, all sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries each year. Make sure everyone knows the sound of the alarm and how to react immediately whenever it sounds. • And remember, if there really is a fire in your home: ONCE OUT, STAY OUT! Once you are out of your home, call the fire department from the nearest outside phone. Never go back inside a burning building.
