S p e e d s k a t e r s a t O ly m p ic The O akville Speed Skating Club begins its fifth season next Wednesday (Oct. 6) on the Olympic size ice at River Oaks Community Centre. The club meets twice weekly from October to April and it invites all who are interested in learning a new ice sport. The sport is open to all ages and levels of skaters. Each member is encouraged to do their best and progress at their own pace. Family is the key word as it is highly usual to find a father-son, husband-wife or brother-sister combination on the ice. Skated in a hockey arena on a 111 meter oval track, speed skating is a combination of technique, strength and endurance. Although a group of skaters with varying abilities are on the ice together, each skater trains individually towards their own goals. s iz e ic e p a d This could mean a higher placing in the next skating meet, skating to beat their per­ sonal best time or improving their skating technique. The program, run in conjunction with the town of Oakville Parks and Recreation Department, provides a safe environment for recreational and competitive skaters.
