Rangers bounce back Glen Abbey on Sunday, Sept. 19th, was the scene of the Oakville Rangers AAA novice season debut, and it wasn't a pretty scene. The visiting Niagara Falls squad applied pressure from the drop of the puck and were rewarded with a goal 42 seconds into the period. The home team attacked from that point, but it was Niagara that scored. Just before the period ended, Brian Urquhart netted Oakville's first goal, with assists to Mark Borcsok and Steven Guzzo. The teams traded second period goals leaving the visitors with a 4-3 second peri od lead. Scoring for Oakville were Spencer Metcalfe (with help from Anthony Scalia and Urquhart) and Patrick Marsh (from Metcalfe and Scalia). But the rest was all Niagara as they counted three more goals to polish off the Rangers 7-3. Goaltending heroics by Peter DiSalvo were not enough to ward off the hard-playing Niagara Falls team. The Rangers travelled to Brampton on Monday, Sept. 20th, for their road debut against Halton Heights. The pattern faced in the season opener repeated itself in this test with Halton scoring at the 11-second mark. The Rangers evened the score with their first goal of the game at the 12-sec ond mark of the second period, but, not to be outdone, Halton replied on their next possession. Three more goals later in the frame saw the Oakville team trailing 5-1. The final frame was a different story. A passing frenzy in this final frame along with persistent checking paid off as the visiting Rangers potted four goals to even the tilt, the tying goal coming off a nifty rink-long rush by Adam DiMarco on a pass from Steven Guzzo. With two min utes left, Halton scored the winner and escaped with a 6-5 decision. Other goals were credited to Tyler Stothers (2), Scott Tanski and Spencer Metcalfe. Other assists were earned by Tanski (2), Aaron Kachkowski (2), Metcalfe, Anthony Scalia, Patrick Marsh, Mitchell Fillman. The comeback displayed a lot of determi nation after being initially outplayed and outscored. On Saturday, Sept. 25th, the Rangers were back at Oakville Arena looking for their first win, and they succeeded. The first period was scoreless but each team notched one early in the second peri od with Patrick Chaisson's goal from Brian Urquhart tying the visiting St. Catharines club. That's when goaltender Peter DiSalvo went to work. He stoned the visitors attempt to go ahead. His work seemed to lift the Rangers who potted two more goals (See 'novice' page 46) Friday, October 1, 1999 California Feb. 3, March 16, April 13 25 days $3195 Call for Details - DeNure Tours 1- 800- 668-6859 Cal l 1 - 8 0 0 . 9 0 5 . 0 2 7 0 www.russellhockey.com Gam e of the W eek Low Level Adult Hockey League Fall & W in te r Season ndividual o r group registration) A social, relaxed recreational atmosphere Over 15 locations including O nkvilt, Burlington, Mississauga, Brampton.
