46 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 1, 1999 Novice triple-A (Continued from page 45) before the period ended. Patrick Marsh from Spencer Metcalfe and Steven Guzzo, unas sisted. With just under two minutes left in the Final frame, DiSalvo again came to the res cue, stonewalling another breakaway attempt. An empty netter by Guzzo from Chiasson and Urquhart provided the final 4- 1 hurrah. On Sunday, Sept. 26th, fresh off their win over St. Catharines the previous night, the Rangers journeyed to Guelph seeking to even the season's games at two. But Guelph had other ideas. A spirited first period by the visiting Rangers did not result in any goals. In the second, Guelph swarmed the Oakville net, and after two sparkling saves by goal- tender David Clement, the home side opened the scoring. The Rangers stormed back with goals 12 seconds apart, Patrick Chiasson banging in Tyler Stothers rebound after a pass from Brian Urquhart for the first, and Mark Borcsok firing in the second on a Steven Guzzo rebound off a Scott Tanski feed. Clement continued to shine in the third stopping a two-player breakaway from the blue line, but the home team wouldn't let up and after some fine passing, finally netted the equalizer. The period ended with both teams having opportunities but having to settle for the 2-2 draw. The well-matched game was scoreless at the half despite a couple of chances for both teams. Late in the second half, a high shot from Erin Mills squeezed in just under the post. A similar goal in the dying minutes clinched the game for Erin Mills. Season opener results in 2-2 draw The Oakville Rangers major atom A A 1999-2000 season opener was a challeng ing, yet exciting game and, per haps, an omen of what can be expected from this team in the upcoming new millennium. New millennium, new team! The major atom AA team wel comes seven new players: Matt Bandy, Fraser Milligan, Brett Thompson, Justin Wilson-Kirby and Mark Kingston -- all from last year's A team; Andrew Amodeo from last year's AAA team; and James Aziz, formerly a goalie on the Lambeth Lancers team in the London area. The Rangers were initially dominated by the Braves and, thus, they scored the first goal with 2:24 left in the first. However, keen goaltending by the seasoned Chad March and the new James Aziz kept the Rangers in the game. Despite good passing and a strong defence on the part of the Braves, the Rangers persevered. Matt Bandy scored the goal to tie the game 1-1, assists to Brett Thompson and Ali Robitaille. Player of the Game: Matt Bandy for his goal that has set the pace for the upcoming sea son. Tough loss in hom e opener At high noon on Sunday, Sept. 26th, in Oakville Arena, head coach Dean De Fazio and assistant coach Mark Kirton led the Oakville Rangers double-A minor novice hockey team to its home opener against the Georgetown Raiders. The boys made a whole-hearted attempt to reverse the 5-2 loss against last year's league champions. Goaltender, Andrew McGuire, made a dramatic save by deflecting the puck halfway to the blue line with his helmet cage. This was after being repeatedly assaulted by the Georgetown offensive line. Yet, by the end of the second period, the team was trailing 3-0. At 2:16 into the third period, Travis James pounded in the first home goal with the assistance of Kelly Barchan and Mathew Feric. The Raiders retaliated with two more goals. The Rangers' fight ing spirit was still burning at 8:06 in the period when Kelly Barchan scored the final goal of the game with the assistance of Andrew Bertrand and Mathew Feric. This team's roster was only decided by mid-September and contains a number of first-time 'rep' players. These boys will utilize their upcoming practice schedule to further develop as individual players and to gel as a team. All are invited to support these play ers.
