O a k v i l l e - T r a f a l g a r Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department was flooded, forcing staff to think quickly to ensure the safety of staff and the pub­ lic. Oakville Museum suf­ fered a hit by a lightning strike which destroyed its power transformer and left staff and guests alike in the dark. The OTMH mishap was a direct result of extensive construction now underway on the hospital's ER when the sheer volume of rain forced water into the build­ ing in several places. As part of the major ren- P u d ovation project, hospital walls have been removed and according to hospital spokesperson Trish Carlton, there has been "a fair amount of intrusion into the existing structure." Once the leaks started, the hospital was forced to implement what is known as critical care bypass, meaning ambulances were instructed to take em er­ gency patients elsewhere. This remained in effect for about three hours. In the meantime, all the water was cleaned up.
