Yamaguchi, a member of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights, was in East Timor as a moni­ tor of the recent­ ly-conducted ref­ erendum, on behalf of the I n te r n a t io n a l Federation for East Timor (IFET). "It made me wonder what kind of peo­ ple are running the world. The 35-year-old Toronto student is angry that it has taken the international community so long to respond to the problems of East Timor. "In the last 24 years, they've had no support from the international commu­ nity," he said. While in East Timor through August and into September, Yamaguchi kept a diary of his experiences. On Sunday, during the Oakville Peace Festival, he read portions of that diary to the small audience. On Sept. 4th, he wrote in his diary, East Timor residents and the rest of the world received the results of the referen­ dum on independence. East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, had voted 78.5% in favour of independence from governing Indonesia. Tension in the capital city of Dili, where Yamaguchi was stationed, had risen since the beginning of vot­ ing. After the announcem ent, he said, foreign­ ers began to flee the country. On a visit to the a i r p o r t , Yamaguchi said he and his team from IFET saw news crews from CNN leaving East Timor. The streets of Dili were deserted fol­ lowing the announcement of the vote results, with shops closed and very few pedestrians. "I felt very vulnerable," he admitted. While Yamaguchi managed to leave East Timor on Sept 5th, he says one of the most difficult parts of the experience was leaving behind the Timorese people he had met, knowing that they could be in danger of losing their lives. While Yamaguchi had gone to East Timor with the noble hope of protecting the citizens, he admits that when he flew out of the country, he felt like a failure. "I felt we were there in vain," he said. On Aug. 30, 1999 while in the area of the GO Station on Cross Avenue, a young man was approached by a bandit who asked him for a cigarette and a quarter. The victim, wanting to be helpful, pulled out his wallet and the suspect bran­ dished a four inch 'flip' knife and demanded the vic­ tim's cash. The victim complied with this request and the suspect fled on a mountain bike across the parking lot and onto the train tracks. The suspect is described by police as a white male, 26-28 years old, 5 ft. 6 in. tall and weighing 140 pounds. He had short black hair, a few days' growth of beard, acne scars, crooked teeth and wearing jogging shorts and a black T-shirt. He was riding a black mountain bike with green and purple writing.
