D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 22, 1999 Provincial cham ps w in league title The Wiberg Oakville Cobras U-13 rep soccer team, hot off their Ontario Cup provincial championship win, won their coveted league title last night. In their final game, the Cobras needed one point to clinch the elite league title. And they did it in style. Not content with a tie, they came from behind to defeat archrival Burlington 2-1. It was all Oakville pressure in the first half but it was Burlington who grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 30 minute mark against the run of play, and that stood up at the half. After withstanding some early second half pressure, the Cobras began to move forward and create chances. They got the equalizer on a successful penalty shot by captain Laura Bandy, after teammate Amanda Cicchini was taken down in the penalty area. Moments later a good run by Stephanie Muldoon drew the same roughhouse response from the Burlington defence and Karen Zmirak smacked the resulting free kick just wide. With continued Oakville pressure, Zmirak took a pass frorfi Bandy, beat one defender, rounded the goalkeeper and kept her feet and her cool to tap home the winner. In addition to Ontario Cup and elite league champs, the Wiberg Cobras also won four tournies, including the Robbie and National Capital tournament in Ottawa. The Cobras would like to thank their sponsors, the Wiberg Corporation, Marlar Homes, Bramham Bros., Sullivan Entertainment, Nottinghill Place Chiropractic Centre, Fourth Line Auto, Centerline Truck Lube and Becton Dickinson. A ll in a good week's work Three victories and one tie in a week's span of time saw the Oakville Rebels U-14B girls rep team make their League Cup final and put themselves in contention to win the regular season title. Building on an already successful ini tial season, the Rebels defeated an aggressive squad from St. Catharines 3-1 in the League Cup semifinal. Down 1-0 after 10 minutes, Oakville tied it up near the end of the half (Johanna Cicchini) and added two more in the second half (Sara Shannon and Andrea Assaad) which they controlled. In league play, Oakville downed Welland 2-0, dominated a strong Georgetown team 5-0 and in a show down that would help determine who would win the league championship, tied London 1-1. • SALES • SERVICE • INSTALLATIONS FREE In-Home Estimates • Qualified Licenced Service Technician Bavbeque *N Leisure Living 2070 Speers Rd. #1 (west of 3rd Line on the south side) 847-9633 SEPT 24 & 25 Inserts • D irect Vent ARCHGARD Free StandingSALE Barbeque T l Leisure Living W 2 0 7 0 S D e e rs R d . #1 (west of 3rd l ine on the south sirlet EARLY B IR D BEST b u y s 2070 Speers Rd. #1 (west of 3rd Line on the south side) 847-9633 1 coupon per customer. Johanna Cicchini and Andrea Assad were constant threats while Andrea Swimm and Jennifer Stockstill were solid in defence. Goals by Sabrina Holman, Jessica Moniz, Sara Shannon, Andrea Assaad and Katarina Vulic led the Rebels to their victory over Georgetown. Strong mid- field play from Sarah Mason, Kate Sienna and Ashley Menard kept Oakville in control of the game. The defence was anchored by the fine play of team captain Hanna Beartup and Amy Cornell. The key league showdown against London was an exciting affair, befitting the league's top two teams. The first half ended scoreless with both teams unable to score on several opportunities. The second half was dominated by Oakville and their efforts paid off when Ashley Menard scored midway through the half. Oakville continued to pressure London with both Amy Cornell and Sara Shannon coming close to adding to the score. With 10 minutes remaining, how ever, London managed to knot the equal izer totally against the run of the play. Hannah Beartup, Andrea Swimm and Sara Shannon were outstanding in a total team effort. Oakville currently leads the league by three points but London have two games remaining and could take over top spot if they win both games. Oakville played its League Cup final on Sept. 18 at Mohawk Park in Hamilton against the Premier League champs from Guelph.
