United Way looks to Town staff for more contributions this year Oakville, show us the money. This year's United Way Campaign chairperson, Don Pangman, made a special pitch to town employees, at Monday's council meeting, asking more staff to contribute this year. He wants one-third of those on the town's payroll to make a contribution to this year's United Way Campaign, which officially kicks off this weekend. Currently 24% of municipal employees contribute, said Pangman. In 1998 more than $30,000 was raised through automatic payroll con tributions made by town employees, and from special events such as payday barbecues. Pangman said aiming for 33% among town employees would corre spond with the town's population in need of United Way services. Last year 40,000 people, or one- third of Oakville's population, required at least one service from a United Way funded agency. This year's campaign slogan is "When You Say 'Yes', You Say 'Yes' 36 Times" referring to the number of local United Way funded agencies which provide services, mostly to seniors, students, poor and single par ent families, and children. According to Pangman, despite stronger economic growth in the region, agencies are facing increasing demands from a growing seniors popu lation in need of long-term housing, transportation, and in-home care. As well, high youth unemployment has required added programming for those at risk of substance abuse, mental health dilemmas and crime. The 1999 Campaign goal will be unveiled Sunday at noon, when the 36th annual Bathtub Race and Lakeshore Walk-A-Thon take off. Another fundraising event is slated for the Oct. 23 weekend, with the first annual Carousel of Nations, which will feature culture, cuisine and art, repre sented by Oakville's 12 cultural com munities.
