Quick primer on using deck stains Dear Pat: I want a finish for my new deck that will protect the wood from weathering. What would you recom mend? Answer: It sounds like you're looking for a good exterior stain. Basically, stains are thinner paints which can let the colour, grain, and tex ture of the wood shine through. The lightest stains are called semi-transpar ent, and are available in a lot of neat colours. Their low levels of pigment tint the wood, while allowing its natural grain and texture to show. Some of these stains are not suitable for high-traffic sur faces like deck floors, so always check the label. Opaque stains hide the grain and colour of the wood, but allow its texture to show. They are available in a full range of paint colours. Pat Matton is the Colour Specialist for Sico Coatings, a Canadian-owned manu facturer of paints and coatings. The Music Garden was conceived by Yo-Yo Ma, the celebrated cellist, as one of a series of translations of Bach's cello suites into other artistic endeavors. The Music Garden is based on Cello Suite No. 1 for unaccom panied cello. This suite has six different dance movements which correspond to six design ele ments of the gar den. ' P r e l u d e ' became an undu lating river scape with curves and b e n d s . 'Allemande' is a forest grove of wandering trails. 'Courante' is a swirling path through a wild- flower meadow. 'Sarabande' is an arch-shaped conifer grove. 'Menuett' is a for mal flower gar den. 'Gigue,' the lively jig and the final movement of the suite becomes wide grass steps that dance you down the path to the outside world. Yo-Yo Ma retained Boston landscape design er Julie Moir Messervy to con vert the idea into garden areas. Julie led a group of Garden Writers on a tour of the gar den. First, we watched a video produced by Rhombus Media, one of a six-film series. This showed the process, conception, and design of the Music Garden by Yo-Yo and Julie. The garden was designed for Boston, but the financing and timing was not possible. It was offered to Toronto, where it was eagerly accepted. The site is on the waterfront at Queen's Quay West just past Spadina. m p K Full Colour Flyer ^ i n Today's Paper!
