After spending the summer months outdoors or cottaging, September usu ally brings with it a familiar itch to fix up the nest. And just in time to offer a little inspiration to your nesting projects is the first-ever Oakville Harvest Festival presented by* A Day In The Country. The festival consists of workshops, each centred around creating a lasting, decorative piece for your home. All of the workshops, detailed below, will take place at Paradiso's on Lakeshore Road at Navy St., from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Harvest Wreath: Wednesday, September 29 Make an impressive statement to welcome your guests with this everlast ing wreath--an autumn version of the wreath featured in April 99 Victoria magazine. Harvest Window Box: Friday, October l Not everything at harvest time is gold and orange. Just look in the fields as you drive in the countryside--purple asters, burgundy grapevines and soft yellow meadows. This "living arrange ment" (looking very much like a win dow box), is made with potted plants like flowering khale, vinca, ivy and herbs in the plum, wine and sage colours of the season. Stunning on a mantle, a harvest table or as a last hooray on the patio. $115 for guild members, $125 for non-members. Guidling the Groaning Board-- Master Class: Saturday, October 2 Guild your Thanksgiving groaning board with a wonderful harvest arrangement of everlastings, grains, mini pumpkins and gourds, set off with honey beeswax candles. This is a Master Class which means you'll need some skill level to attend this seminar. $125. Guild members only. A Cast Iron Basket: Wednesday, October 20 In a lovely, reproduction French Garden cast iron basket, you'll create an everlasting arrangement so wonder ful you'll wonder if you made it your self! FOR THE CHILDREN: This furniture set by Morigeau-Lepine of Saint-Hubert Quebec, displays great refinement and is constructed of maple. The wood's natural golden hue give the furniture, bunk bed, chif foniers, hutch, bedside table, shelf, desk and chair, a unique look. The manufacturer received the 1999 Product of The Year award from The National Independent Nursery Furniture Retailers Association. The firm's line can be seen locally at Cribs N More, 2501 Hyde Park Gate. Water marks on furniture can be repaired Wasn't that a great party last night? Seeing all those old friends again. But did you notice that many of them left something behind? Take a look at your wooden table tops. Yes, there they are, those nasty water rings. But don't worry. I'm here to help you with a few clever solutions to the water ring prob lem. It's a good idea to first try an appli cation of mayonnaise. Spread it liberal ly over the water ring and leave overnight. Wipe off with a soft dry cloth next day and that should do the trick! If it's a stubborn ring, you may need another application, or you can try this: removed by scrubbing with a paste of baking soda, water and few drops of lemon juice...rinse and dry. But what do you do when little Johnny decides to take the short-cut home from school..you know, the one I mean...right through mud puddles?! here's how to handle the situation. Get little Johnny to bring you a raw potato from the kitchen, slice it in half and rub the mud stain with the potato halves...soak the item in cool water for a while...and then launder as usual. Wipe the toothpaste off and apply some petroleum jelly to the area. Wipe off after 2-3 hours...and your fur niture should be as good as new. And by the way, if it happens to be a marble table top, many stains can be RIDLEY SHOWROOM 35 Crawford Cr„ Campbellville • SALES • SERVICE For All Your Window, Door, Column & Moulding Needs 905-854-2228 An Oakville Beaver Feature To reach this section call 845-3824 Fax:337-5567 defines home accessories JOHN SIMKINS W riters convention offered trips & tips The Garden Writers Association of America annual con vention was held in Toronto last month at the Royal York Hotel with 500 members attending. The four-day event included a trade show. I was taken ^ u by "The Intelligent Plant Light" which makes houseplant growing infallible. The plant sits under and is plugged into an automatic fluores cent light that may be set for any light schedule and plant require ments. A green light on the base comes on when water is needed. The convention time was split up between periods of concurrent lec tures, workshops, and trips to gar- den-related local attractions. On Sunday, the photographers were up at 5 a.m. for a Photo Shoot at The Don Valley Brickworks at 6 a.m. 'File Don't Pile' was a popular workshop on organizing paper into files and files into drawers, and setting up a system to find them in 60 seconds or less. The organized people split off for a workshop on herbs. In the afternoons, we went on "Story" Tours. On Sunday, we visited Picov's, the premier Water Garden and Fishery in North America. I have not seen such a large and varied number of completely planted Garden Pool displays which were outside. The displays ranged from 4 ft. x 5 ft. Little Junior kit at under $300 through 10 kits to the 8 ft. x 17 ft. Koi Kingdom kit at $3,800. There is one for every garden and all the parts to design your own. The fish ponds are a magnet for children, and fish food machines allow them to feed the fish who come in droves with their mouths open. Picov's is in Ajax just east of Brock Road on Kingston Road (#2 Hwy.). Phone 1-800-663-0300. Their web address is www.picovs.com.
