If a human gets rabies, they die." The rabies virus, which attacks the central nervous system, is typically spread through animal bites. A strain of fox rabies has been in Ontario for years. But raccoon rabies poses a far more dangerous threat, said Nosal. That's because there are 10 times more raccoons living in or around urban areas than there are foxes. And the spread of fox rabies has been checked thanks to an oral vaccine put into animal fat and air-dropped as bait by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Since then, cases of animal rabies in Ontario were reduced from 2,000 in the 1980s to 79 in 1998. Halton can cite similar statistics, recording 42 rabid animals in 1981 and only one since 1996. But there is no approved oral vaccine for raccoon rabies in Ontario, as yet. A lot of progress could be undone if the new strain makes headway into the province, said Nosal. "If raccoon rabies came into Ontario, we would be back in the thousands again," he warned. The Halton Regional Health Department has been gearing up to take down the problem since the early 1990s. In 1995, the Region instituted manda tory vaccination for cats and dogs. For low income families, the HRHD has introduced a voucher program allowing pets to be vaccinated at a discount price. Educational programs are in place at elementary schools and information sheets are available to the public. Ian Anderson House walk/run Sunday The Avalanche and Blue Stars will be among those taking part in the special fundraising memorial walk/run to sup port Ian Anderson House on Sun. Sept. 19th. The Oakville Rep soccer teams Blue Stars Boys Under 9 and the Avalanche Girls Under 11 successfully won the South Region Soccer League in their respective divisions. Now they're busy collecting pledges in preparation of this Sunday's event. Ian Anderson House is Ontario's first free-standing cancer hospice which pro vides quality palliative care free of charge in a home-like setting for resi dents of Halton and Peel. Everyone is encouraged to join the teams. Registration begins at 10 am., followed by the event itself at 11 a.m. Participants can enjoy either a 4 km or 8 km distance. The walk/run starts at 2635 Lakeshore Rd. in Mississauga (where there is also parking) and ends at the hos pice, located at 430 Winston Churchill Blvd. in Oakville.
