Wednesday September 15, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT F acility turns skateboarding in to serious business I knew the skateboard park would be kind of neat to have a peek at. After all, with a 10-year-old son clearly fascinated by the whole skateboarding/snowboarding thing, I had to find out for myself what it was all about. But I thought I'd stand there politely, all the while silently hoping Drew wouldn't get hooked. So much for praying. The day we were at Shell Park, we dropped in before my daughter's championship soccer game. We knew we couldn't spend a lot of time, but we ended up sitting on the grass in the sun and watching, fascinated, for close to an hour. All these guys weaving in and out, up and down the ramps, back and forth along the walls. It's like watching the snowboarders finally master the ropes of what looks like an easy sport. Amid the oh so casual air of the teens, a lot of perseverance is at play. Stand on the surrounding grassy hills for awhile, or better yet, sit in the sun as my 10-year-old son and I did Saturday and watch. Watch the dozens of young skateboarders weave in and out, a certain grace amid the baggy pant set although they would never admit it. Among this set, it's important to cultivate a certain look - an insouciant, what the heck I'm not really trying kind of look. But there is talent among that lot, that's for sure. Some of these guys know their way around a skateboard, flipping high into the air and then back again, seemingly effortlessly. And while, mother-like, I 'm thinking "where are their helmets?" my son is breathing excitedly: "Oh, look at that guy...he's really good!" And while I'm puzzling, truly, about the attraction to this sport where you speed down cement ramps only to hit cement walls and then do it all again, my son is entranced. Already, at 10, three years before he can use the park without supervision, he knows the sport, its language and its look. w DIANE HART And, like snowboarding, he has to do it. To him, and untold others it would appear, it's fun. Their perseverance is astonishing. They would glide down a ramp, feet gripping the board, picking up speed and make their way up the other side of the cement wall only to spin around in the air and back down the walls to the other side. At the other end of the park, the older guys were going back and forth, up one wall, across and down the other. And if they happened to miss a spin, they'd just do it all over again. And again. And again. Beside me, I could practically hear Drew counting out the money he had saved from his summer paper route. "I could watch this forever," he breathed. Surprisingly, so could I. Well, not forever...but it was neat watching some of these moves. I marveled at their skill and their determination. Again, mother-like, I thought I would be sitting in a sea of smoke and music. Only one smoker among the almost 100 boarders. And music? Only the clatter of the wheels on cement. Serious business, this, it appeared. And, again, such perseverance. One guy, red shirt flapping away in the breeze, kept slipping off the board the moment he left the wall. Again and again, he would climb the wall only to fall back again, picking the board up oh so casually and dusting himself off. Again he took his place in line. No matter what, he was at the wall, heading down the ramp and then up again. Slam against the cement walls at an alarming speed and back up. Brush off the wheels, the shirt and they're off again, practicing the same manoeuvre. Some of these guys are good, really good. Of the almost 100 kids I counted haphazardly weaving their way in and among the boarders, only one was female. And she was on skates, trying to master the unforgiving walls. Back and forth she'd go until finally she sprawled on the ground, exhausted. Later outside the snack bar, a couple of younger guys on in-line skates were practicing a few moves. Asked how they liked the park they immediately grew animated, talking of the ramps, the speed, the turns and flips. "But there were too many teenagers," one lamented. Would they return, though? Oh, sure. As if I had to ask.
