Like the rowing rivalry between the Cambridge and Oxford folks in England, the annual bathtub race is an old tradition for high school students in Oakville. With more than 3,000 spectators lining the streets yesterday, nine teams competed in the United Way of Oakville's 36th annual Bath Tub Race. "We've had tryouts and only the fittest and faster runners could join the team," said Kelly Dunn, an OAC student at Appleby College. The 1.1-kilometre race on Lakeshore Road between Trafalgar Road and Navy Street, fol­ lowed the Walk Way of Hope in downtown Oakville, which officially launched the United Way's 1999 fundraising campaign. The charity has set a record goal this year of $3.1 million, 8.5% above the $2.79 million it achieved last year, said its chief executive officer, Julia Dumanian. "Considering our agencies' caseloads are increasing in double digits, 8.5% is a realistic goal." Dumanian adds it's an "aggressive goal," and that the money is needed to support the United Way's 36 funded agencies which provide over 60 programs and services. Appleby's winning seven-man, six-woman relay team had been practising in the private school's parking lot at 6:30 a.m. every other day. They took home the Moen Tub Award. Others were less prepared. "We had our first practice this morning," admits St. Thomas Aquinas' captain Melanie Ng. "But we're all in high spirits, racing for a good cause." Oakville Trafalgar High School won the Spirit Award and MacLachlan College won the Teachers Tub Race. Eight teacher teams participated.
