Emphasis on fun, physical fitness and personal development ADVERTISING FEATURE A recent organizational restructuring has positioned the Oakville Gymnastics Center (OGC) to become Ontario's num ber one recreational facility. The emphasis with the recreational program is on fun, physical fit ness, and personal development. "While we do offer an excellent competitive program, we recog nize that, to best serve the Oakville community, we must ensure that our facility attracts and fosters the optimal development of recreational athletes," notes Bill Merry, president for the Center. "Recreational athletes represent over 95 per cent of our members. Their needs are a priority." The Center recently adopted the CAN-GYM program. Widely used throughout Canada, it is recognized as the best program for tracking a child's progress and for ensuring that the training matches their individual needs and abilities. The new program director, Andrew Deslippe, oversees the CAN-GYM program and his enthusiasm for the program is obvious. "The CAN-GYM system offers a specific series of goals and rewards that encourage gymnasts to master certain skills before graduating to the next level. The system has been proven effective at increasing skill development and, more importantly, at increasing a child's self esteem and the enjoyment they derive from train ing. The CAN-GYM approach also facilitates the delivery of quality programs and consistency between coaches and from year to year." The program director is responsible for both the recreational and competitive programs. This permits improved co-ordination between pro grams and gives the recreational coaches and ath letes new opportunities to upgrade their skills and to benefit from other new educational and health initiatives. The change will also facilitate an easi er transition for the recreational athlete if they decide to move into the inter-club and competitive streams. At 15,000 square feet, the Oakville Gymnastics Center is one of Canada's largest gymnastics train ing facilities. Few clubs offer as much in terms of equipment. This means that everyone gets to spend more time on equipment. "Our recreational athletes' access to equipment is not restricted to accommodate competitive training," notes Merry. "The result is that in our recreational program, ath letes progress more quickly and develop their skills to a higher level." Programs include Artistic Gymnastics, Power Tumbling and Trampoline. All our programs are offered to boys as well who now represent over 15 per cent of member athletes. Watch for upcoming articles on Trampoline, Power Tumbling, and Competitive Programs at the Oakville Gymnastics Center. Training is offered seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with programs available from 18 months of age to adult.
