As usual the Classic wrapped up with the $50,000 Grand Prix and it was won by Leslie Burr-Howard of the U.S. who won a silver medal for her country in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Second place was claimed by Canuck Amy Millar who fin ished ahead of her well known father, Ian Millar. Ainsley Vince of Milton won the $25,000 Gerling Canada Classic. The five-day Classic attracted more than 600 horses competing in more than 150 classes. Owner Janet Manbert said everything "went great -- we had wonderful attendance." It rained a bit on the Friday night but she said even that was wel come to keep the dust down. Next year, she said Hendervale is planning five shows, two of which she hopes will also serve, respectively, as a Canadian Olympic Qualifier (the Mid- Summer Classic in July) and a World Cup event (the Summer Classic in August). The schedule will be round ed out with a Spring Classic over the May 24th weekend, a Fall Classic over the final weekend in September and an indoor Classic in April. Also on the table is Hendervale's bid to be named as the site to host the equestrian events for the 2008 Olympics should Toronto be successful in its bid. "The 2008 bid is an ongoing process," explained Cain. "There are a number of us, both former and current Olympians, who were out in Winnipeg for the Pan Am Games as Team 2008. "It was just recently launched and we are the face of the Toronto Olympic bid for 2008." Press reports would lead one to believe that Beijing is the odds on favourite, but that doesn't bother Cain. In fact, according to Cain, being a front runner has been a curse, of late. "The last eight sites chosen for the summer and winter Olympics, the front runner did not win," he said. (See 'Cain1 page D2) By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Larry Cain spent most of his life trying to get to the Olympics, a task he was rather successful at, as his three Olympic appear ances in which he won gold, sil ver (in 1984) and finished fourth (in 1988) will attest to. These days, however, the Canadian paddling great is trying to get the Olympics to come to him. Cain, who in 1997 became only the second paddler to be inducted into the Canadian Photo by Christine Smyth Oakville firefighters, pictured in the left photo, won the Oakville Sports Day best-of- three tug of war challenge against a Halton Region Police contingent (including honourary member -Larry Cain) in two straight B A C K T O S C H O O L SIDEW ALK SALE A U G U S T 2 6 - 2 9 S E E T H E O N E T O ONE I N S E R T I N T O D A Y ' S P A P E R FOR MORE DETAILS CALI [90S] 279 SHOP [74(71 SQUARE ONE MISSISSAUGA CITY CENTRE taasaassssssr 829-5200 Sports1 544-6703 An Oakville Beaver Feature Editor: NORM NELSON 845-3824 (Extension 255) Fax:337-5567 BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR SIDEWALK SALE FOR MORE DETAILS CALI [90S] 279 SHOP [74(71
