SQUIRT Silver Medal Game: Sting vs Crushers In a game which was dominated by the Crushers from the opening face- off, the Sting did well scoring a couple of late goals to cut the lead to only five. The game was close all the way through as the Rats held a two goal lead at halftime. The Antz battled back making it 3-2 early in the second half. (See 'Halton Roller Hockey' page D4) Wednesday, August 25, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Cherokees win playoff championship to wrap up perfect year The Youth Summer Hockey League Glenleven C herokee's capped off a perfect 13 and 0 summer hockey season by capturing the peewee title at Ice Sports this past weekend. Led by the stellar goaltending all season of Eric Joyce, the Chiefs overcame both a short bench and two opponents who were determined to dethrone the regular season champs. Kyle Merstorf led the way with two goals in game one of the two game qualifying round in a 5-1 victory over the Lightning. Jamie March, Eric Car, and David Sissons also scored, with helpers from Patrick Kahnert with 2, Dan D'Alimonte, Dean Kenwood, Barrett Cook, Johnathon Oliver, and Lawrence Edmonds. The Lightning were not going down without a fight in game 2 as they pressed to even the series. The close checking affair went right down to the wire as the Chiefs buried two quick goals in the last four minutes to seal the win 4-2. Sissons had the hot stick in this Brockville tourney champs "Each week, we get better," manager Dave Downer, as he described the Oakville M inor AA ball team's performance of late. "Three weeks ago, at the District tournament, we split four games. We moved on to the Scott Tokessy Memorial in Kanata and won three of four. This week, we did it one better and won three straight to win the Caldwell Memorial tourney in Brockville. Our pitching has come together and, most important, our defence is playing very well. I take my hat off to the boys for their excellent play." The championship game in Brockville saw Oakville take on Pembroke, in a winner take all tilt. It was a scoreless tie until the third inning, and despite encountering some sterling pitching on Pembroke's part, Ryan Mallough started it off with a double, Alden Black and Ryan Malhotra both walked. Daniel Keresteci stroked a single past the Pembroke shortstop to score Mallough and Malhotra, which it turned out was all that would be needed. Mallough, who had a very hot bat in the tournament, singled in the fifth to score Scott DeGroot for the insurance run in the 3-0 win. Starting pitcher Matt Downer (2 k's) and Black (6 k's) combined for a no-hitter, just missing a perfect game by one batter. Adam Davidson's outstanding catch of a sinking liner in the first inning was the fielding gem of the game. In earlier games, Oakville had little trouble with Orleans, winning 13-1. With pitchers Davidson, Downer and Mallough holding the opposition at bay, Chris Stewart started the win off with a walk, and runs scored by Downer (3), A.J. O'Brodovich (2), Roger Lambert (2), along with single runs by Jeremy Webster, DeGroot, Patch Channing, Mallough, Black and Keresteci, made it an easy win. Lambert, with three hits, and O'Brodovich with a double and a sin gle, were the hitting stars of the game. Oakville's second game was against Ancaster, who they had tied and lost to in previous tourney action. Despite facing the same pitch er who had no-hit them in the district championships, Oakville got off on a much better footing when hard-hitting catcher Lambert hit a double to score O'Brodovich, with his double turning into a run as Ancaster committed a couple of costly miscues, allowing for a 2-0 Oakville lead. It stayed that way until the fourth, when DeGroot's screaming liner down the right field line for an inside the park home run made it 3-0. Mallough's RBI single to score Tyson Theaker, fin ished it off for the 4-0 win. The pitching tandem of Downer (2 k's) and Black (7 k's) held Ancaster off the score board. Bringing further honours to the Oakville Minor AA's, was the awarding of the tourna ment's MVP trophy to their sterling catcher/hitter Roger Lambert. game as he potted two goals and an assist. Spencer Marlow and Merstorf rounded out the scoring with assists going to Car (2), Oliver and Matthew Zeismann. The final brought forth a feisty and physical Thunder team, who, backed by a hot goaltender nearly stole victory from Glenleven. Kenwood, however, took control by jamming home 2 goals and 1 assist. Merstorf found the back of the net twice as well with support once again from Car and Oliver, 2 assists each, Sissons, Cook, Adam Cordeiro and Michael Berrie.
