Everything from major functional reinforcement of chassis, doors and body to little touches like the new European-style gated shifter and the cargo hooks that keep your grocery bags from falling over. Too much change? No. It's bigger. It's better. But it still feels, drives and handles the comers and the straight and narrow with all the confident aplomb and smooth tracking of its predecessor. Even though Mr. Tachemori demurred and left most of the driving to me, I never got tired of piloting the Outback. After that long day of bone-jarring off-roading and the high-speed run through the mountains, I felt that Subaru had made its point.
