But there he was, fresh off the plane from Japan, still at considerable altitude, impas sively glancing through the side passenger window of the Outback sedan. He was gaz ing deep down into the mountain drop below as gravel pinged the wheel wells and we skittered around yet one more hairpin. He was probably wondering if this gai- jin automotive hack with the big smile on his face really knew what the hell he was doing. He might even have been wonder ing if he'd have been better off safely back in his Vehicle Experiment Department, the offices where he has spent the last few years nursing the development of this, the latest third generation Subaru. If Tachemori-san had any doubts, they weren't evident and would have been about the new 2000 Legacy Outback. We were traversing the Powderface 2000 Subaru O utback Wagon I don't think they * Trail through the Rocky Mountains, dust- pluming our way along a winding moun tainside route usually reserved for those brave and foolhardy enough to rally race for a living. Earlier we had thumped and slithered our way through mud and over mountain on an off-road course. It was a sharp-sloped road, no better make that a path, a pot-holed wallow that no Subaru owner in his right mind would even dream Of attempting. These were exercises in excess. But they're the kind of automotive torture ses sions confident car companies put on for the press when they want to show that "our stuff can take it." And when your stuff is a smallish station wagon that claims it can run with the big dogs, off-roadable sport utility trucks like Blazer, Explorer and Cherokee, you'd better be prepared to prove it. Since 1996, the Subaru Legacy Outback has provided customers with a viable alternative to truck-based SUVs. Boosted into the sales stratosphere by the "Crocodile Dundee" commercials (note: remind Subaru to send Paul Hogan another cheque), the Outback's success has spilled over onto baby brother Impreza Outback Sport Wagon and spurred the launch of the Subaru Forester. As popular as the Outback is, people sometimes forget that, first and foremost, the Outback is still a Legacy. Although, admittedly, a Legacy on steroids. The main differences between the two? The Outback is a little burlier, courtesy of in-yer-face styling. Lots of sport-ute style body cladding, beefier front fenders, new ground effects, bigger folding side mirrors, a model-specific grille and a two- tone paint finish. Slightly wider tires are mounted on standard 16" alloy wheels. The Outback version of the Legacy lives up to its off-road image, boosting its all-wheel drive abilities with fog lamps, standard lim ited slip differential, a 25mm height (S e e 'O u tb a c k ' p a g e D 7) Kidcheck at Oakville Honda Saturday O a k v i l l e Honda is hosting a free Kidcheck Fingerpr int ing session by Child Find Ontario on Saturday.
