The names of the winners, Lucy Anh Tuyet Le and Shara Hap, were drawn by broker of record, Tina Gardin, at Sutton Quantum's Oakville office on January 17 at Sutton Quantum's breakfast meeting. "This draw was the perfect way to kick off a new season," says Gardin. "2017 was a great year for us and we're more than happy to be able to do this for our loyal clients." Le and Hap, both first-time homebuyers, were automatically entered into the draw simply through buying a home with Sutton Quantum agent Tessa Rojas. "I'm very happy for my clients," says Rojas. "The money will definitely go a long way towards helping them with their finances." Sutton Quantum held four $2,500 give­ away draws over the last year, and the much- anticipated $25,000 was the grand finale. Anyone who bought or sold a home with a Sutton Quantum agent in 2017 and quali­ fied under the terms and conditions of the contest, were entered in the draw to win the grand prize. Estate sales, corporations, commercial sales and leases were exempt from the draw. Last year, the Sutton Quantum giveaway was a brand new Fiat in a similar draw for the 2016 clients. Splurging on investment pieces and renovations can add serious value to your home, but there are some things that don't have to break the bank to be a great fit. So, to help make those tough calls on your next home project, we asked some of the GTA's leading DIY and reno experts for their top tips on when to save and when to splurge. Splurge - Don't be dim, invest in great lighting: As an industrial designer turned celebrity handyman, Chris Palmer has plenty of advice when it comes to home renovation. One of Palmer's tips for a great in­ vestment is to install LED lighting, "Electricity is only going to get more expensive and LED lights are more energy efficient, saving you money and requiring way less maintenance." Save - If it ain't broke, don't fix it: Cityline's go­ to girl on all things DIY, Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, be­ lieves firmly in the old saying, ' If it ain't broke, don't fix it', especially when it comes to things like furniture and kitchen cabinets. Perrault suggests that if an item is still functional, you should think about just giving it a cosmetic face-lift with paint or fabric, "This can be a great way to affordably customize your space and test drive some of the latest colour trends." Splurge - Invest in structural touches: It may not sound like a sexy splurge but according to Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, sprinkling some extra budget into the structure and efficiency of your home can save loads of money in the long run. One trick Perrault suggests to do is, "while walls and ceilings are open, insulate with spray foam and seal duct work with mastic, you can even wrap water pipes with foam insulating tubes to not only retain heat, but also absorb sound." Investing in the structure doesn't have to be all prac­ tical, Perrault added, " If you're renovating floors, add a little luxury by installing heated floors, although you won't be able to see your splurge, you'll definitely be able to feel it." Save - Cut back on flooring, tubs and toilets: Jordan Spear is an expert craftsperson and carpenter who is currently working on his biggest project to date, restor­ ing an 1850 Canadian farmhouse. He suggests be­ ing budget conscious when selecting flooring material, tubs, and toilets. "As long as the items are durable and easy to clean, there's no need to spend a lot on these items, no one truly needs an $8,000 toilet." Splurge - Invest in quality items that you use on the daily: According to Spears, a good rule of thumb for small renovations, like a bathroom, is it's better to splurge on items that need to stand up to daily use. " Investing in good quality fixtures will save money and headaches in the long run" said Spears, adding, "qual­ ity faucets and showerheads are less prone to failure." Spears also suggests that another great investment for a bathroom renovation is a quality vanity, "Spend­ ing a bit more on a vanity that is quality built, looks great, and has ample storage is a sound investment."
