As Seattle's coach and general manager last year, Harvey acquired the Oak­ ville native from the Wash­ ington Spirit. But the vet­ eran Canadian midfielder never got a chance to play for Seattle, missing the NWSL season with a knee injury. "She's just got tons of ability. She's quick, she's great on the ball, she's got an eye for goal," Harvey said on the Royals' web- site. "She can play multi­ ple positions and for a club like ours, where we are, that's exactly what we needed." In four seasons with the Washington Spirit, Mathe- son scored a team record 23 goals before being trad­ ed to Seattle. Matheson's 191 games with the national team ranks second all-time to captain Christine Sinclair and her 20 assists ranks third. She has scored 17 goals for Canada in inter­ national competition, in­ cluding the winning goal in bronze-medal game at the 2012 Olympics. She won a second Olympic bronze in 2016 and also helped Canada earn gold at the 2011 Pan Am Games. "She's a fantastic per­ son to have in the locker room and obviously when she was injured I saw that side o f her a lot," Harvey said. "She'll be someone who's just really good for the team." P.
