Oakville MP John Oliver announces $372 million in health research grants NEWS OAKVILLE - Oakville MP John Oliver has an nounced $372 million in fed eral grants that will be used to fund health research pro jects across the country. Oliver made the an nouncement on Jan. 26 on behalf of Health Minister Ginette Petitpas. He noted 512 health re search projects would bene fit from the funding. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) chose the recipient institu tions, which are considered leaders in their fields. The subject of health re search is near and dear to Oliver's heart as he previ ously served as president and CEO of Halton Health care Services. "Scientific research holds the key to finding so lutions to many of the social and health challenges we face in Oakville and across the country," said Oliver. "As someone who has been actively involved with CIHR and health care in Canada, I'm so pleased to see funding that encourag es our brightest minds to tackle these issues right here in Canada. I want to thank CIHR as well as all our amazing world-class health researchers whose hard work and determina tion is improving the health of Canadians and strength ening health care in Cana da. I also want to recognize one of our great local uni versities, McMaster Uni versity, and congratulate their research teams for be ing selected for this fund ing." Oliver said the grants ad dress pressing health issues that matter to Canadians such as cancer, autism, heart disease and demen tia. He also pointed out the funding has an economic impact as these research grants provide the funding to create high-quality jobs for post-doctoral students, lab technicians and many others in labs, hospitals and universities across the country. "Our government is fully committed to taking con crete action when it comes to the health and well-being of all Canadians. This in vestment will fund research that will lead to new treat ments, breakthroughs, and fundamental advances in health science," said Petit- pas in a press release. "We are proud of our re searchers, and will contin ue to support them in their efforts to help keep Canadi ans healthy and continue their research right here at home." Dr. Roderick R. McInnes, acting president of the CIHR, said the $372 million represents an enormous in vestment in health research for the science community and benefits all of Canada.
