NEWS Oakville m other fum ing over son's suspension for not getting m eningitis vaccine, w hich he did "They're en tire system is n o t working. Children are being h u rt by th is . " - M elissa Gasic DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com An Oakville woman says her 15-year-old son was suspended from school on Feb. 9 for not getting a vaccination . on ly he did get the vaccina tion. Melissa Gasic, whose son Marko attends T.A. Blakelock High School, says she is beyond frus trated after allegedly be ing told by officials at the high school that her son is still on a list of students who are to be suspended for not getting the menin gitis vaccine Menactra. She maintains Marko got that vaccine at the Hal- ton Region facility at 1151 Bronte Rd., Feb. 7. Gasic says she even re ceived a receipt from the clinic, which she showed to school officials to no avail. "Their entire system is not working," she said. "Children are being hurt by this." In the fall of 2017 Marko missed an in-school clinic offering the Menactra shot. This became a problem as the Halton Region had announced that all high school students in the re gion must report their up- to-date immunization re cords or exemption to the Halton Region health de partment by Feb. 8 or risk being suspended from school for up to 20 days, starting Feb. 9. Among the vaccina tions required under the Immunization of School Pupils Act of 1990 are those preventing menin gococcal disease. Halton Region health department says they held 33 in-school clinics offer ing meningococcal immu nization in high schools in 2017 and 2018. They also noted high school students with in complete immunization records received ad vanced notices about the Colin McConnell/Torstar file issue September 2017. The letter informed parents how they could get any legally required immunizations for their children and how to re port these immunizations to the health department. Gasic said the vaccine her son needed was not available through family doctors, meaning she had to contact the Halton Re gion health department to arrange an appointment. She says she was given a date in March 2018. "The suspension date is Feb. 9, but they told me when I booked this ap pointment that he would be OK because they had him in the system," said Gasic. "Then what happened was about a month ago I received a letter in the mail from Halton health department saying my son was to be suspended as of Feb. 9. I was shocked." Gasic says she called the Halton Region again and this time was told about a clinic at the Hal ton Region facility that Marko could attend to get the shot sooner. She said a death in the family caused delays, however, an appointment was made and Marko got his vaccine on Feb. 7. Despite this, Gasic says the information has yet to be communicated from the health department to the high school, meaning Marko is now suspended.
