NEWS Halton Catholic board to revisit motion calling for stringent school fundraising guidelines Trustees of the Halton Catho lic District School Board will re visit a recently-passed motion that places more stringent rules on what charities or nonprofit organizations its schools can support. The motion, which passed at the Jan. 16 regular board meet ing, forbids financial donations to any organizations that sup port, either directly or indirect ly, abortion, contraception, ster ilization, euthanasia or embry onic stem cell research. "It is important that we don't fund things that we say funda mentally that we are against," said Oakville trustee Helena Ka- rabela, who brought the motion forward. "As a Catholic institution we need to make sure we're not sending $1 to them or helping them raise $1." The board's current policy gives no specific criteria or guidelines for funds raised; the criteria needs to be more specif ic especially in "today's confused moral climate," added Karabela. Although supporting Kara- bela's motion in spirit, several trustees questioned the need for a policy amendment due to HCDSB's existing mission state ment and "governance of our Catholic-based practices," com mented Burlington trustee Ar lene Iantomasi. "I think it would be a very la borious and unnecessary prac tice that our senior staff would have to undertake in monitoring every activity in every fundrais er throughout the system. I real ly don't see how they could do it," said Iantomasi.
