In game one against Clarkson, Sarah Mair, notched Oakville's only goal, in the second half, to tie Clarkson 1-1. Game two had Oakville up against a gritty Under-10 Erin Mills team, with Oakville dominating the play but only able to edge Erin Mills by a 2-1 score. Scoring for Oakville was Erin Mitzel and Sarah Mair. Game three was a one-sided affair, with Oakville winning 11-0 over Milton. Goal scorers were Lauren Burke (4), Sarah Mair, Jenna Guzzo, Lindsay Franco, Caitlin McConnell, Michelle Maillet, Stephanie Krush and Erin Mitzel. The OakvUle Under-13 Comets rep soccer team made it to the quarterfinals of the Schwan's U.S.A. Cup soccer tournament, held at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota during the week of July 11th-17th. Six hundred teams from 23 countries and 33 states partic­ ipated, making this the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. The Comets played in the elite 'Cup' flight of the tourna­ ment. After a tough first day, with losses to Chicago, Ajax, and Arden Hills, Mn., the team rebounded with two wins (2- 1 over Maple Brook, Mn. and 3-1 over Appleton, Wi.). These results enabled the Comets to place second in their division and to advance to the 'A' playoff round. The opening playoff game matched the Comets against the Northport (Long Island) Thunder who had gone unde­ feated in their preliminary grouping. The Comets dominated the first half and led 1-0 at the break on a goal by Brien Chamney. The New York side came on in the second half and tied up the match. The game remained deadlocked at the end of extra time. In the ensuing round of penalty kicks, Chamney, Ryan Eng. Patrick Mcdonagh and Brent Lukowski calmly put their shots in the back of the net. Keeper Jared Millar made two excellent saves and the Comets were into the quarter-finals. Their next opponent was the eventual tournament finalist, St. Croix (Mn.) Tsunami, a side that had won all four of its first round matches without yielding a goal. The Comets fell behind 3-0 midway through the second half, but to their cred­ it, they outplayed the Minnesota side during the latter stages of the game. Josh Ledderhof scored a much deserved goal on a beauti­ ful three-way passing play with Steven Meagher and John- Mark Ssennyonjo assisting. The Comet comeback ran out of time but coaches Matt Love, Ron Millar and the boys can be well pleased with their showing. The team showed that it can compete with any of the better international sides. Players who represented the Oakville Comets in the U.S.A. Cup: Mark Bums, Brien Chamney, Ryan Eng, Ryan On the podium in two toumies The Oakville Shooting Stars girls under 10 All-Star team coached by Ray Pade came away with a championship win and a second place finish in recent soccer tournaments held in East York and Aurora. In the East York event, Oakville went undefeated in the prelim­ inaries to advance to a tournament championship game against Darlington. Despite controlling much of the game, Oakville came away second with a 3-1 loss. The following weekend, the team travelled to the Aurora Tournament starting with an 8 a.m. game against the Aurora Stingers. Strong defensive and offensive team play had Oakville controlling the entire game and they walked away with a 5-0 win. Game two saw Oakville lose 1-0 against a strong Ancaster Selects team. A 3-0 win over Scarborough in Game three advanced Oakville to the playoff round. In the semifinals, Oakville won 3-0 over Brams Unitpd. In the championship game, Oakville earned a hard fought 2-1 win over Ancaster, the only team to score against them in the tour­ ney. A pass to Katie Mason on right forward unleashed a sprint halfway down the field which saw Mason score unassisted. Oakville's second goal came just before the end of the first half. Centre midfield Justine Bernier fed a pass up the middle to centre Casey Whitaker who then carried the ball down the field before mak­ ing a sharp pass to the left forward Victoria O'Hara. O'Hara darted towards the extreme comer of the field before unleashing a left shot which found its mark. The second half saw Ancaster come back strong, and they managed to score a goal. Excellent goal-tending by Oakville's Erin Murphy including a loose ball scramble in front of the net kept the Ancaster team at bay. Oakville regrouped and turned on the pressure and came away victorious with a 2-1 win. The Aurora Tournament saw Oakville allow only two goals while scoring 13 against. Well done Oakville!
