Wednesday, August 4, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Local artist sketches athletes at Pan-Am games And athletes can make their mark on canvas as well as in the gam es By S c o tt M ac A rth u r SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER W hile Oakville may be recognized for the athletes it has competing at the Pan-Amer ican Games - Donovan Bailey, Larry Cain and Kyle Warrington - there is also a local artist on hand, putting a different spin on the action. Grace Tanouye, a 27-year-old artist whose first love is sports, spent time in W innipeg creating charcoal por traits of some of the Canadian athletes in action. "I've done a portrait of (Canadian gymnast) Kris Bur ley already," said Tanouye, who returned to Oakville for a couple of days during the games on personal business. "I also have portraits already completed prior to the games on display there." Tanouye, who competed as a national gymnast at the age of 12, kayaked at the Burloak Canoe Club for years, and played rugby in British Columbia, is thrilled that she can combine her love for sports with her talent in art. "I participated in a lot o f sports during my youth and still remain active today," Tanouye said. "But it's nice to be able to do something a little different with your pas sion, and mine happens to be making art out of it." Tanouye will usually photograph an athlete in action and draw from what she sees in the picture, as opposed to capturing a mental image and drawing from memory. "It's too difficult most times to draw from memory, because with sports, due to the nature of the action, things can be really specific," she said. "When it comes down to freezing a moment in time, that's much easier to do with a picture than with your memory." Tanouye's biggest project at the Pan-Ams is getting as many Canadian athletes as possible to make their mark on a large canvas she has set up at the Canada Sports House, a temporary spot at W innipeg's Union Station that features interactive exhibits and other arti facts. * "What happens is, any athlete I can grab gets a piece of paper and their choices of paint colours," Tanouye said. "They put the paint on the paper and smudge it against part o f the canvas. They can then leave it abstract or create an image out of it, depending on their prefer ence. They then sign their name beside it, and it becomes part o f a big collage." VIA Rail and Altis International sponsored Tanouye's trip to Winnipeg. VIA transported Tanouye and her art to Winnipeg. Tanouye's purpose at the games was to give the ama teur Canadian athletes a little bit o f the spotlight. "Everybody has heard of Donovan Bailey and other athletes that have gone on to make a name for them selves around the world," said Tanouye. "This is a chance for those who are not quite as well known to be recognized, and I'm happy to help in the small way that I am ." "She Dropped 55 lbs. Without Dieting!" Will Astound You Photo by Peter C. McCusker Oakville artist Grace Tanouye had a number of her black-and-white paintings at the Pan-American games in Winnipeg. She also pro vided the Canadian athletes with a canvas on which to put their mark. New video exhibit opens at Centennial Gallery An exhibition of Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez's dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y, a 68- minute video that investigates the media politics of contemporary catastrophe cul ture, can be viewed at Oakville Galleries' Centennial site from Aug. 14th to Oct. 3rd. In his 68-minute work, Grimonprez tells the unofficial history of the golden years of airplane hijacking, the '70s and '80s, when terrorists ruled the air and their violence was prime-time viewing. The video cobbles together images from old network news footage and filters them through voice-over excerpts from two nov els by Don DeLillo, Mao II and White Noise. In fast-paced editing splices of archival film footage, goofy cartoons, and iconic images of political figures, Grimonprez composes a compelling meditation on the revolutionary impulse and its effect on the course of this media-savvy century. Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y has been labeled as one of the most important discoveries at Documenta X and has since been shown in Paris, New York, Guadalajara, Graz, Rio de Janeiro, Zurich, Leuven, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Brussels and Boston. The video has also been shown world wide at film and video festivals. The opening screening of dial H-I-S-T- O-R-Y will begin at 7 p.m. in Centennial Gallery, with Grimonprez present, on Aug. 13th. A reception will follow at 8:30 p.m. in Gairloch Gardens.
