McCusker F L O W E R F A N S : Keith Ellison and his two-year-old daughter Deanna enjoyed the flowers at the Shell Park garden on Sunday. Bell's whereabouts unknown (Continued from page 1) bells are supposed to be given back to the communities for which they were named, but so far the fate of the HMCS Oakville bell remains unknown. "There is a whole mystery angle to this," said Gignac, who explained there are many stories surrounding the artifact. "But no one knows for certain if it ever came back." Thanks to Gignac, the RCSCC Oakville won't have to design a new crest after she located pictures of the original version from World War D. Trouble is, the colours remain unknown since all she has are black-and-white images and an imprint from the ship's original christening pro gram. Two of the 30"-by-36" crests adorned the ship's gun shields while a third - also missing - hung in Oakville's council chamber. The ship's crest was based on the Town's own coat of arms and Gignac says it's interesting to see how much of it has been incorporated into the current munici pal version. The HMCS Oakville's "white ensign," a flag containing the Union Jack given to the ship by the Town, has been located in a British Columbia museum. Once the RCSCC Oakville receives its Charter, hopefully in the weeks ahead, organizers will try to have the flag returned. (The Charter will also allow fundraising to commence.) Another important, but equally elusive, component of the ship's history is its crew. Lt. Hal Lawrence and Stoker Petty Officer Art Powell, who both jumped on the German U-boat before its sinking, passed away about three years ago. Many other of the 60 to 80 crew members - most of whom were 16 to 22 years old in the war - are also deceased. Gignac has a list of all their names and home towns plus many pictures, however, and now has the arduous task of tracking down survivors. "We have bits, but it doesn't get us all the way there," said Gignac, who has con tacted the Canadian Navy and will seek help through the "Lost Trails" section of the Canadian Legion magazine. Gignac is also receiving help from the Red Cross and local churches, whose own archives may contain valuable informa tion. "The dedication of everyone is amaz ing," said Gignac, who can be reached through the RCSCC Oakville website at www.dove.ca//cadets. The Milton Sea Cadet Corps, RCSCC Chaudiere, expanded to Oakville in 19% by creating a satellite corps known as Company B, RCSCC Chaudiere. The plan was to create a stand alone Oakville Sea Cadet Corps within four to five years. Until recently, the Oakville Sea Cadets remained part of the RCSCC Chaudiere. The Department of National Defense has since placed their operation under com mand of Ll(N) Steve Cooper of RCSCC #65 Iron Duke (Burlington) for the coming training year. The Oakville connection with the HMCS Oakville is not in name or numeral only: the ship was christened in Toronto by Lady Mountbatten then in Oakville by the wife of mayor Dr. F.M. Deans. The local ceremony involved many area residents. The plan is to formally "stand-up" the corps on May 28,2000, starting with a cer emony at the Oakville Curling Club. From there, cadets will parade along Lakeshore Road to Navy Street and then down to Lakeside Park. Once there, the guns of the HMCS York and HMCS Star will be fired off the pier.
