Attew‘s involvement in Milton endless years, this August. She moved here from Oxfordshire, Engâ€" land in 2003, with her children who were both under five at the time. Raised in Crawâ€" ley Sussex, she has a thick British accent, which is why her friends and acquainâ€" tances have come to know her as The Brit. She got her volunteering feet wet almost upon arrival here. It all started at Chris Hadâ€" fhield School, where her daughter was a senior kindergarten student. "Rick Nodwell, the principal there then was one of the first people | met and he‘s still a dear friend," she said, recalling where it all started. "I was cutting out cardboard dinosaur pieces and volunteering in the classroom. "In England, you don‘t volunteer at the schools the way you do here. There, you only go into the school for three reasons: your kid‘s in trouble, report cards and school plays." Attew then sat on the school‘s parent counâ€" cil, eventually serving as its president before moving on to volunteer her time with other organizations. Her community involvement is seemingly endless. Over the years, Attew has helped coâ€" ordinate various Santa Claus parades, orgaâ€" nized a teddy bear candlelight vigil to show support for the people of Sandy Hook, Conâ€" necticut, after the school shooting tragedy, drove the bears down to the vigil and raised Halton District School & Board funds for the Darling Home for Kids (Hospice/ Respite Experience) for an outdoor wheelchair accessible playground. She is also involved Understand difficulties in a new light + Develop healthier coping strategies + Increase meaning in life with the Relay for Life, serving as lead organizâ€" er one year, has volunteered with the Amazâ€" ing Race Milton, raised funds for the United Way of Milton, and served with the Friends of Milton Hospital, which fundraised for the hosâ€" pital expansion. Attew is also president of the Milton Optimist Club, raising money for youth and is on the community advisory board. A fullâ€"time marketing/office manager at Milâ€" ton Orthotic and Wellness Centre, Attew reâ€" mains immersed in her role as a volunteer and organizes numerous activities in town. Most recently, she signed up to participate in the | | Heart and Stroke Foundation 5km walk/run. She‘s twice been named Milton‘s Citizen of the Year (as an individual recipient and also as L part of the Friends of Milton Hospital) and is the proud recipient of the Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee Medal, which she finds funny, since she had to be an immigrant to Canada before she was recognized by her British monarchy. "I had to come here before | got that recogâ€" nition," she chuckled, giving credit to her parents for instilling in her the importance of community involvement. "My mom and dad are still alive and it‘s because of them that | began giving back," she said. "Here in Canada, there‘s opportunity to give back." € Parents and community members invited to provide feedback on LONGâ€"TERM ACCOMMODATION PLAN Parents & community members are invited to review and give feedback on the Halton District School Board‘s 2015â€"2016 Longâ€" Term Accommodation Plan.
