Pastâ€"president, Warren Turnbull, indicated that he will not be runâ€" ning, and with Karen Waller not seeking reâ€"election, that leaves five positions on the board open. Each term is three years. MEMBERSHIP BLITZ GARA is seeking to boost its numbers and coffers with a memâ€" bership blitz the first week of May. It, currently, has 1,600 members and will be canvassing to get a miniâ€" mum of 2,000 households. The twoâ€" year membership fee will be $10, a $4 reduction over past fees. Stephen Klein, president of the Glen Abbey Residents‘ Association, ended speculation Monday night that he would not be running for a reâ€"election to GARA‘s Board of Directors. "I will be seeking reâ€"election as a director of GARA‘s board at the Annual General Meeting," Klein stated at the monthly board meeting at Pilgrim Wood School. "I am proud to be part of this board, and want to put into the community what I want out of the community." (GARA held its annual meeting last night and election results were not available at press time.) The association is kicking off its year of special events with a night at the Blue Jays â€" Baltimore Orioles baseball game on May 6th. The board has purchased 500 tickets which will be sold to residents at $15 each and include a bus ride to and from the SkyDome. Klein, nominated by the board for the Mayor‘s Volunteer of the Year Award, will be seeking his third term on the board. He has served one term as president. Communications chair, Diana Erwin, said this event will be folâ€" lowed by the Annual Glen Abbey Garage Sale on May 8th, with rain date May 15th; and Summerfest ©93 which runs Aug. 20th through Aug. 22nd. GARA is down $2,954 for its 1992 special events. All events â€" except the Garage Sale â€" operated at a loss, with the Oktoberfest being DJ ranthaven Homes presents their newest community of fifteen 2â€"5 acre estate residences â€" "SADDLEWOOD" in Kilbride. Erwin suggested, as an alternative, organizing a famiâ€" ly night in conjunction with the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre on New Year‘s Eve. Director, Wendy Perkins, later said that she regarded one of GARA‘s functions was to contribute to "sense of community", and that the losses incurred were "no risk to the financial picture." DEDICATE BENCHES This spring, GARA will be dediâ€" cating the seven benches it purâ€" chased for the Glen Abbey parks and trails. Each bench will have a plaque bearing the name of a past GARA president. The benches and the biggest loser. The board is rethinking running this event acain. According to Fitzsimmons, because of rain and the soggy conâ€" ditions of the ground, the trucks bringing in the rides for the event damaged the fields, so GARA fixed the area and replaced the sod. o . Perkins, GARA‘s Community Services chair, hopes to purchase a bench for the community annually. Perkins is, also, gearing up for the opening of the Upper Middle Road bridge. She is consulting the town on a GARA‘s possible involvement with festivities for the official opening. COMMUNITY BANNER The proposed community banner poles on Dorval Drive are on hold according to Perkins. It does not look feasible to place the poles on Dorval Drive, but the Town is exploring other options. GARA is, also, investigating using a pixel sign on Dorval Drive. GARA is prepared to fund $1,000 of the cost and the Town has earmarked $3,000 towards the poles. Director, Grant Buchanâ€"Terrell, is working with the YMCA to examine organizing summer proâ€" grams for youth under 14 years old. GARA will be sending out a survey to children in area schools to get input. On other business, Perkins reported that she has been advised by the Town to take GARA‘s request for a light in the park adjaâ€" cent to Abbey Lane School to the Glen Abbey Community Policing Committee which is drawing up a list of safety issues in the communiâ€" ty. _ The next GARA meeting will be held on April 5th, at Pilgrim Wood School, at 7:30 p.m. The Oakville Real Estate Show represents an outstanding exhibiting opportunity to talk oneâ€" toâ€"one with thousands of Oakville home owners during an eventful three day time period.
