The Glen Abbey Ladies Sloâ€" pitch league has been around since 1986 organized by a handful of local women who wanted, you guessed it, "a league of their own!" i 507 SPEERSROAD â€" SATURN _ OAKVILLE gaar 845â€"1610 1Ssu2UV So in January of that year â€" with a committee of five â€" they hit the pavement, pounding on doors for sponsors. They found four who were willing to take a chance on the new league. The shirts were ordered, the diamond arranged. "We needed 56 players to cover our quota of 14 player per team," MacKenzie said. "I remember sweating it," her chum added with a laugh, "because we had four sponsors and we‘d MacKenzie admitted she had been "playing ball" since she was five years old. Married to a Saskatchewan banker who has been transferred a number of time, she always found a team to play on in whatever city they landed; Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Montreal. In Prince Albert, there was a slight problem. As all the teams had a full quota of players, she had to field a whole new team in order to get into the league. MacKenzie was not to be denied her innings pitched. PLAYED IN MONTREAL Robertson and MacKenzie, both mothers of three, were team mates in Montreal (which explains why the league plays with ‘Montreal Rules‘), and by coincidence moved to the same street in Oakville. This was in 1984. By 1986, they were both suffering withdrawal sympâ€" toms. They missed baseball and they missed the postâ€"game socials which were a gas. baseball lore. This year, the league has six teams and a long waiting list. "We would like to expand again, but we just can‘t get the diamond for anothâ€" er night." PLAY WEEKLY The GALS play one game a week (either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday) at Alderbrook Park. They pay a registration fee of $40 MacKenzie said she was hoping to start a dayâ€"time "coffee league" this summer to accommodate some of the women on the waiting list. Diamonds are readily available durâ€" ing the days. Now they have to beat off women with a baseball bat . . well, practically! "When people saw us playing and heard through the grapevine how much fun we had," declared MacKenzie. "We had no trouble fielding teams." ordered the uniforms, but we didn‘t have quite enough girls. So we started nabbing people on the streets." The Oakville North News is published every Friday by the Oakville Beaver 467 Speers Rd. Oakville, Ont. L6K 354.
