Of course, the reds are still» matured in wood for some time before being bottle aged, but the whites are now very clean, fresh, and fruity, no doubt due to the introâ€" duction of stainless steel. There are a few woodâ€"aged Chardonnays around, but they become rarer and rarer, and cleanliness and freshness is prevailing. As the sun is setting over Santiago, we suddenly remember Flannigans and supper. Our taxi driver obviously knows the place too, as he takes us straight to one of the local sidewalk restaurants not far from the River Maipo. Nobody in Santiago stops for stop signs or red lights. Matter of fact, whoever gets first to a place turns out a winner. I promise myself never to drive in Chile. I suppose that Flannigans my be described as some sort of a inâ€"thing with the more affluent inhabitants," but we are interested only in the wine list. Outstanding, to say the least, and we take turns ordering different bottles. As time goes by, we even forget to order supper, but who really needs it anyway? Midnight has passed as we head back to the hotel and we are not quite sure if the lights overhead are stars or lights on top of mountains. To the best of our estimation, we have drunk a total of ten bottles of wine that day, and all of them were very good. So good, in fact, that I wake up early in the morning with a clear head. That, my friend, is a sign of some incredibly good wine. June will be a strong month with Unforgiven, A Few Good Men, Forever Young, Body of Evidence, and Bram Stokers Dracula to name just a few.
