Mitchell‘s achievements mean he‘s headed to Kentucky this year, June 20th to 26th. The feat won Turner the chance to compete in the International Youth Skills Olympics this July in Taipeh, Taiwan, against over 400 competitors from 30 countries. but also ranked over college comâ€" petitors. It‘s unreal," says Turner, an old hand at it. Mitchell‘s teacher, Adams, will accompany him and that costs too. Mitchell just found out last week that he won the chance to go to Kentucky when he placed first in auto body repair at the Ontario Skills Olympics May 7th and 8th in Pickering. APPRENTICESHIPS Both youths are employed in a fourâ€"year work experience/college apprenticeship program with Oakville firms. Turner is in his third year at Kerr Cadillac Pontiac Buick while Mitchell is at Budd‘s Collision. "We‘re doing what we can with government sources and we have a number of ideas we are going to be trying to get off the ground," said Penman, noting a school car wash as one. Both students and school are finding themselves hard pressed to find sponsors willing to assist with the funding it‘ll take for the two Robs to make their upcoming comâ€" petitions â€" $1,200 for the Louisville, Kentucky trip for Mitchell and a whopping $5,000 for Turner‘s Taiwan trip. However the recession appears to be dampening the success according to the youths and their teachers. uate Mitchell. It puts General Wolfe â€" auto shop teacher Doug Adams and tech director Dave Penman, too â€" "on the map." Oa Penman compares the competiâ€" tions to Olympic athletic events where the host country provides food, housing and entertainment for competitors. The Taiwan trip is 16 days long, four for competition and 12 for stuâ€" dents to learn the customs, become oriented and take in some sights. It‘s hoped Adams will be able to accompany Mitchell to Kentucky. The Taiwan trip is expected to be very controlled and Adams said Canadian authorities have already spoken to the American contingent to arrange for Turner to blend in with them. While the first supporter of Adams‘ accompanying Mitchell is Turner, as he relates the benefits of having his teacher there as helper and mentor, both Penman and Adams say the money appears to be just too tight this year for anyone to accompany Turner to Taiwan. "There are other people out there who should be willing to help in this situation," said Adams. "One of the reasons why we feel so vulnerable is because DuPont and Snapâ€"On have been so good in the past at supplying help in this way," said Penman. Last year DuPont and Snapâ€"On sponsored Turner‘s trip to Kentucky however the school doesn‘t want to wear out its welcome with just a few sponsors. A Letter to the Editor has also appeared in an auto body trade magazine in the hope of finding sponsorship. However, only about 25% of the $5,000 needed to send Turner to Taiwan has so far been raised. One of four Rotary clubs in Oakville which were approached for funding has committed funds while another is in the process of doing so. CONFIDENT "We are confident that between suppliers and school funds we can raise the money," said Penman of Mitchell‘s $1,200. The students could try to pay for their competitions out of their own pockets but Penman said it‘s policy of Skills Canada (organizers behind the competitions) and the Halton Board of Education that the school is responsible for sending the stuâ€" dents. Auto body repair competitions test collision, estimating, body repair, dent repair, priming, paintâ€" ing, plastic repair, welding, frame diagnosis and blending, said Competitors have to wear speâ€" cial, unmarked outfits for the comâ€" petition to ensure impartiality and must meet rules like no eye contact during competitions that stretch for days. Turner also notes that he would have been lost if Adams hadn‘t accompanied him to Kentucky last year. It was Adams who "orgaâ€" nized" everything and kept the young Turner on track and on time for the full schedule of the trip and competition. "It‘s ten times harder. It doesn‘t even compare. And the hospitality they give you is just incredible too," he said. Turner says the North America skills competition "blows away" the Halton and Ontario competitions.
