MM Meats Charity Day for Crohn‘s Linking sponsors to captioning (Continued from page 2) lished in 1992 to advance the cause of captioning Canadian TV proâ€" grams, chiefly for the deaf and hardâ€"ofâ€"hearing. In the past two years, captioning has received a boost in the Canadian broadcasting industry, largely thanks to CCI, as the company successfully linked corporate sponsors with television networks and facilitated the capâ€" tioning process through private capâ€" tioning houses. In this country, the government mandates a certain amount of closed captioning, but there is no funding available except in the case of proâ€" jects by Telefilm Canada. Broadcasters must absorb the costs themselves. Enter CCI. In the United States where capâ€" tioning is much more prevalent, it is considered an educational tool as much as a boon to the deaf and hardâ€"ofâ€"hearing and is funded by the Department of Education. Ostafichuk declared, "We think we have an educational breakdown. In the States, it is far worse. So this is one way for them to overcome litâ€" eracy problems." Ostafichuk comes uniquely qualâ€" ified for what she is doing, but not only because of her heritage. A graduate of York University, she has worked both at TVOntario and CHCH TV in Hamilton giving her insights into the public and the priâ€" vate broadcasting milieu. In addiâ€" tion, she has had handsâ€"on experiâ€" ence with an independent video proâ€" duction company, all the while maintaining an awareness of what was developing in the field of capâ€" tioning. At CHCH, she was publiâ€" cist and station consultant for capâ€" tioning which brought her face to MM Meat Shops across Canada, including Oakville‘s two locations at 635 Fourth Line and 2163 Sixth Line, will be flipping burgers for charity this Saturday, June 12th. The Crohn‘s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, which has formed a local chapter, will benefit from MM‘s fifth annual Charity BBQ Day. For a minimum $1 donaâ€" tion, people will get a hamburger or hotdog and soft drink. This year‘s national goal is $400,000, making for a total of $1 million raised over the five years. "At some point, I realized I had to go over to the other side (become an advocate for the deaf)," she said. "I just needed to do it." For one thing, she came under the influence of Pierre Levasseur â€" the chairman of the Canadian Captioning Development Agency. Ostafichuk said, Levasseur has "done wonderful things" in bringing captioning closer to reality. About five years ago, Ostafichuk formed her own lobby and research company called LOBCO Inc. (Since the company wasn‘t making money, her husband Larry was paying the bills, Bev thought it only fair to dub it: "Larry Ostafichuk Bev Company Inc."). LOBCO represented the deaf and hardâ€"ofâ€"hearing at CRTC hearâ€" ings on captioning and undertook a research project for the Canadian Captioning Development Agency ARGUS ELECTROLYSIS CLNIC 0%0 For New Clients Valid ‘til June 17/93 Please phone 844â€"4247 for appointment SSSSSSSSSS DOWNTOWN OAKVILLE + 183 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST 845â€"8911 DOWNTOWN BURLINGTON : 389 BRANT STREET 639â€"6165 OPEN THURS. Ostafichuk hopes that the Report â€" now with the Department of Communications and the CRTC â€" will result in some regulation changes in terms of increasing capâ€" tioning in Canada. Meanwhile, the erstwhile broadcaster and advocate for the deaf has become an entrepreneur and facilitator by means of her newest enterprise, CCI. Through financial expert, Roy Chanyi, vice president, Revenue Development, CCI is raising money from the private sector to pay for closed captioning. In exchange for donations, corporations receive posâ€" itive recognition (technically not advertising) which reaches the entire viewing audience, as well as partial tax credits. It‘s working. The stated goal of 100% captioning of Canadian teleâ€" vision programming by the turn of the century is clearly not pie in the "It has been an uphill struggle," the company‘s executive director said cheerfully but added confidentâ€" ly, "we will deliver." The basis for this confidence? Ostafichuk believes in what she is selling; she understands the issue from every angle; she is focused and energized; and she continues to be firmly familyâ€"based. Baby Haylea is now part of her environâ€" ment, at home, at the office, on the golf course (no word of a lie), even in crucial business meetings. ("I really, really love being a mom!") "She doesn‘t take anything away," the businesswoman asserted. "I don‘t think it‘s unprofessional... it‘s life."
