Halton and Peel P rofes s io nal Executive Network is a selfâ€"help group for unemployed professionâ€" als, white collar types, engineers, plant managers, financial advisors, systems, administrative and marketâ€" ing people of every stripe. The group meets like clockâ€"work at the Club Galaxy on the North Service Road, Tuesday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon. Now you might think when a 100 or more jobless folks get together, the atmosphere would resemble a wake. Quite the opposite was true when I dropped in to the meeting earlier this week which feaâ€" tured a talk by economist Carl Beigie. The gathering was characterized by a distinct sense of purpose and industry, even buoyancy. Humor was evident, though it had an edge; as might be expected of businessâ€" men and women engaged in the serious, but not hopeless task of finding work. 11.4% UNEMPLOYMENT "It‘s a little bit easier to be in the soup if you‘re not in the soup alone," one fellow offered with a grin. The keynote speaker would later point out that 11.4% of Canadians are currently ‘in the soup.‘ My guide for the morning was Bill Watson â€" a Mississauga fellow â€" a marketing man formerly of Peat Marwick. "It‘s lonely out there if you don‘t have some touchstones," he said. The network is friendly, dynamic, supportive, and the weekly speakers are either informative or inspiraâ€" tional. Furthermore, the price is right; everybody pays a buck each meeting. FORMED IN 1991 No one would deny that loosing your job, whether through "reâ€"strucâ€" turing or downâ€"sizing or consolidatâ€" ing out west," is traumatizing, but it is also true that the job search can be "exhilarating and energizing." (These are words I heard more than once from guys in the hunt). HAPPEN has been around since early 1991 and membership, which costs $5, has grown to nearly 750, though not all members are active for a variety of reasons. One of the best reasons, of course, is that 57 members have found suitable posiâ€" tions since the beginning of ©93 alone. And while this organization is actively "selfâ€"liquidating," the burgeoning ranks is a sign of the times.
