And how does his wife â€" high school sweetheart Ruth â€"â€" handle all of this activity? What is clear is the Hamiltonâ€"born Tansony likes to live life in the fast lane. And the middle lane. And the slow lane. "I do like to start a lot of projects and keep them all moving along in parallel," he said. "So I‘m always busy." "People seem to want something they can get up and dance to," he commented. "Like oldâ€"fashioned rock and roll and blues, people love to dance when we play...," ke grinned, "though the waitresses don‘t like it much because it‘s hard for them to serve drinks." The University of Toronto and McGill grad also plays in an "experimental" rock music group called, simply enough, "Modern Rock." The rock group rehearses in Tansony‘s basement twice a month and records original music tapes to send off to talent conâ€" tests. (They‘re looking for a female singer). "The picnic gig was a lot of fun," the father of 2â€"yearâ€"old Ellen said with a grin. "A nice change from the dark, smoky roadhouses where we usually play." I talked to the multiâ€"talented Tansony in the baseâ€" ment of his home. How shall I describe this basement? A hybrid of Wayne‘s World, Peeâ€"Wee‘s Playhouse, and Joe‘s Garage perhaps? (There is a 300â€"pound rotary engine from the musician‘s pet sports car amid the drums, guitars, and keyboard). The fact is, the 35â€"yearâ€"old elecâ€" trical engineer finds the soulful, danceable beat of the blues very satâ€" isfying. And playing outdoors in the fresh air of the park is a definite improvement in venue. He also plays the bass guitar and sings backâ€"up for "Mudcat," a sixâ€"man traditional blues band recently featured at IRRA‘s annual neighborhood picnic in Valleybrook Park. blues. Poor Bob, you say. Forget that. The partâ€"time musician is a confirmed family man now, committed to a safe, suburâ€" ban environment. It‘s a good group, he said, though he continues to be disappointed in the number of actual membersâ€"â€"only 500 to 600, in a neighborhood which includes over 4,000 households. ("What we need is a real galvanizing issue like a nuclear waste dump nearby to get people involved," he joked). When he and his wife moved into their new house in Iroquois Ridge almost five years ago, Bob was still with Bell Canada. (Bell had helped to finance his Master‘s degree at McGill). The Resident‘s Association was undergoing a resurgence; he joined and served as membership chair for a couple of years before becomâ€" ing treasurer. His tastes in music are wideâ€"ranging, too, though he prefers to listen to the alternative sounds of CFNY radio. He‘s not sure who really influenced him, though Rush was big when he was in high school in Etobicoke. He also gets a definite warm glow when he witnesses the worldâ€"wide success of Canadian artists such as Bryan Adams, Tom Cochrane, and Kim Mitchell. "I find that the bass is a more interesting instrument to play now. It‘s more of a thythm instrument, and you get to move around a bit, you know, do the choreography." A mover and a shaker? The expression describes him perfectly; whether he‘s constructing a deck on the back of his house or modifying the engine of his Mazda RXâ€"7 or building a circuit board to link his keyâ€" board to his tape deck to his computer.
