Partners Stephen Skrow and Diane Indovina met while studying for the Bar. "There are not a lot of young lawyers who are willing to go out on their own and chance it," said Skrow, "so I was lucky to meet Diane who seemed to have similar goals to s » min€ After three months of operating out of a home office in Etobicoke, the partners opened â€" Skrow and Indovina, Barristers and Solicitors â€" at North Service Road West and Dorval, this May. Young lawyers open new practice near Glen Abbey "We looked at various areas around Toronto," said Skrow. "Most are "overâ€"lawyered", but we thought Oakville offered us the best opportuâ€" nity because the town is growing quickly." Skrow added that, Oakyville did not have an excessive number of lawyers, and most of them are located in the downtown area. "We decided to open close to Glen Abbey to service the needs of the peoâ€" ple in this community," he said. READY FOR CHALLENGE With three years of law schools, one year articling, and five months studying for and taking Bar exams, Skrow and Indovina feel well equipped to take on the challenges of their profession. "We specialize in family law, real estate, wills and estates, and business law," said Indovina. Because they are still building their practices, Skrow and Indovina‘s rates are below what a young associâ€" ate would charge in Toronto, accordâ€" ing to Skrow. He estimates lawyers fees for a simple will to be $150, for a simple separation agreement $400, and for a real estate closing in this area between $600 and $800. Most of the young lawyers‘ busiâ€" ness so far has been legal aid cases. "This is the way most lawyers build a practice," said Skrow. "You start off with legal aid clients because other lawyers are not servicing them, and then you begin to build a private practice by word of mouth. Financing this new practice was not a problem for Skrow and Indovina. "The banks were quite willing to deal with us, much to my surprise," said Skrow. "I thought that things were a little tougher right now." EMPHASIS ON SERVICE Skrow and Indovina‘s focus is serâ€" vice according to Indovina. Allowing payment arrangements and making evening and weekend appointments for people who are unable to come to their office during the day are all part of "putting the clients‘ needs first." "Lots of lawyers are trained to deal with legal problems," said Skrow, "but they are not trained to deal with clients." The partners have tried to convey a more comfortable atmosphere to clients than they might get in other law offices by furnishing their modâ€" ern office with antiques. "We wanted this place to be a little bit more relaxed, especially for our family clients," said Skrow. "Often they are quite upset and it is difficult for them to share tough parts of their lives." Skrow also believes that having a woman as a partner is an asset when servicing family matters. "One half of every family dispute involves a woman," said Skrow, "and many women are more comfortable dealing with another woman." "People seem receptive to having a woman as a lawyer," added Indovina, "and even someone younger and less intimidating."
