hy golf? It is a simple enough question, and a topical one, what with the town posiâ€" tively scintillating this week with the vibrations of the Royal and ancient game. We know why the Greg Normans of the world golf; fame, glory, big bucks (too bad the Shark had to go home early). But what of us ordinary mortals? Why does the common duffer squeeze three or four (or five?) hours out ‘of an otherwise happy life to struggle around a rolling patch of real estate? Why do we wend our way through sand and bog and lunging trees, sometimes dodging other dufâ€" fers‘ errant strokes, swinging a crooked stick until our hands become raw and our faces insensate, windâ€" lashed pieces of leather? Why keep going, when our eyeâ€" balls throb as if they too had been rolling around in the rough with the evilâ€"minded Top Flight #1 (2, 3, 4 and 5, none of which passed flight school) and our collective backs scream from raking out the sand traps and addressâ€" ing balls on the sides of hills? Why pay good money for the aggravation? Some philosophical musings for ordinary duffers But it‘s obvious, isn‘t it? To anyâ€" one who has ever picked up a mashie or niblick or spoon and hit an elegant shot. Why didâ€"Sir Edmund Hillary climb Mount Everest? "Because it was there." So too golf. There are many golf courses which bear a remarkable likeness to Everest (I am told the Abbey is one); if not litâ€" erally: at least metaphorically. What is golf, if not a metaphor for life? Long and hard and riddled with hazards, both manâ€"made and natural. It‘s the challenge we seek â€" the personal test of ability. The challenge of taking on the terâ€" rain and the weather and maybe three other suck... ah... golfers. And coming out on top. Or if not on top... at least alive. I think this is what Dick Jones was saying, the other day. More or less. I The Oakville North News is published every Friday by the Oakville Beaver 467 Speers Rd. Oakville, Ont. L6K 384. It is interesting to note that the Scots realized almost right away they had created a monster. By 1491, there had already been three edicts passed in Parliament prohibiting the game, as it kept people from more practical went to drive a few balls off the range at the White Oaks Golf Club and found this gentleman in the pro shop. Jones, from Scotland originally, has played considerable golf in his time. He learned the basics at St. Andrew‘s on the old course (after a misspent youth chasing soccer balls). 14 Classified:..........:.......;" 16â€"19 7â€"11 Home Improvement.......... 12 Coming Up . . .
