By CHERYL ELLIOT Special to the North News This Sunday, members of the Glen Abbey United Church will march from Pilgrim Wood Elementary School to a site at the corner of Upper Middle Road and Nottinghill Gate to celebrate the groundbreaking for their first permanent place of worship. "The equipment to start building will be on site at the end of September or beginning of October," said Glenys Reither, chair of the building committee. There are, currently, 150 members who now attend servicesâ€" on Sundays at Pilgrim Wood Elementary School, on Pilgrim‘s Way. The church has been designated the regional church for the area, servâ€" ing River Oaks and West Oak Trails, as well as, Glen Abbey. Hamilton architects Trevor P. Garwoodâ€"Jones Architects Inc. have designed an 18,000 sq. ft. modern brickâ€"veneer building on the five acre property. The church will hold 400 worshippers in its main sanctuary and will have a gymnasium, Christian education rooms, two offices, and kitchen facilities. "We will have additional land left over," said Rev. Bill Brown, minister of the church, "and we are looking at how best we can use it to serve the community." According to Goodman, the conâ€" gregation hopes to be in the church eight to 10 months after construction begins. "We are like transient gypsies right now," said Rich Goodman, chair of the church‘s communication commitâ€" tee. "We have everything in boxes." Even with 200 parking spots slated for the site, only half of the property will be used. He mentioned a seniors‘ centre and an Alzheimer respite centre are two ideas under consideration. Brown has received queries from the Boy Scouts, a nursery school, and a cooperative babysitting group. "Part of the building will be very suitable for young peoples‘ activiâ€" ties," he said. The church now runs a Sunday school, a youth program geared to community service, and an outreach program, but Brown is developing additional community programs for the new church. Now that the Glen Abbey United Church will be encompassing a wider area, he expects an additional minister will eventually be assigned to the church. This year, the congregation raised $12,000 when, for the first time, they rented parking spaces on the church property to patrons of the Canadian Open. The money collected will go towards paying for some of the interiâ€" or finishing of the building. Sunday‘s service will start at 9:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Wood Elementary School followed by the procession to the new church site.
