"About three or four years ago there was a foot of snow out here," said Peter Morris, a league organizâ€" er whose own team was eliminated from the playoffs last week. "That was a lot of fun." Sports BRIEFs North News Oakvill Two interception‘s in the second half by the favored team, including one in the dying minutes of the game by Eagle captain Joe Rutten, foiled a comeback attempt and kept the Hawks at bay for the remainder of the scame. Rutten, who has played in the league since 1985, credits most of his team‘s success this season to luck and a well formatted draft sysâ€" tem. Although the Hawks, who were 5â€"9 going into the playoffs, fought to catch up, strong offensive and defensive skills by the Golden Eagles managed to keep Hawk scoring to a minimum. Instead of maintaining the same players on each team every year, the league, which plays by Ontario amateur oneâ€"handed touch rules, reâ€" drafts all registered players every season to mix up the talent. "We were favored to win," Rutten said of the final result. "We had a pretty good team (and) played well (together). With the luck of the draw, we ended up havâ€" fect, winning the game 22â€"6. "Over a period of about five years you‘ve played with nearly every player in the league," he said. "It makes it that much more fun." Although injuries do occur, Morris says they are minimal because it‘s more of a social gatherâ€" ing than a competitive game. ing a lot of good players and three rookies we had turned out to be really good." Rutten says that the draft system not only makes play fair but it also makes playing the game more enjoyable. Morris agrees stating that if teams remained the same each year, it would not only take the social fun out of the game, but cause problems with cliques forming. This often accompanied by aggressive behavâ€" ior leading to injuries. "This is just guys who go to work on Monday morning. Saturday they come out and have a little fun. It‘s not a highâ€"skill sport. Some of the guys are highly skilled, but you don‘t need to be," Morris explained. "Everybody wants to win but it‘s not overly competitive," adds league president John Pretsell. "I mean, it is competitive but it‘s as much social. It‘s just a chance for the guys to get together and have fun. It‘s a recreational league." Pretsell and Morris, who have seen the league grow from a neighâ€" borhood venture to a registration of over 100 players comprising eight teams, feel that the social side is the key to the league‘s success and the players agree with them. "If you don‘t want to have a seriâ€" ous league, but a fun league," Rutten says, "this is the place to go. It‘s great fun." Registration for the league costs $65 and begins in June. The season starts midâ€"way through July and games are played every Saturday and occasional Sundays. MINOR NOVICE (RED) TEAM EIGHT 5 (Mike Stewart, David Bruce 2, Kyle MacDonald, Chris Cottick.
