Parents upset by brief notice THEOAKVILLE ACNE CLINIC (Continued from page 2) Thirty-two routes were reviewed by the board late last year and several routes were dis- continued, he added. Most St. Matthew’s parents were notiï¬ed of the board’s deci- sion in a letter sent home by St. Matthew’s principal Arlene McCarthy in early February. “We’ve been moving at an alarming rate since then,†said Asadoorian, who was not pleased with the brief notice designed to “prepare your children for walking to school next year.†“How do you prepare children 5 and 6 years old to walk to school...in 1994?,†queried a conâ€" cemed and frustrated Asadoorian. A handful of parents found out prior to the notice’s distribution when one parent registered her child for kindergarten in January and was told there would be no bus transportation. The reason for the cancellation is that the area doesn’t fall within the transportation policy’s dis- tance requirements of beyond 1.6 kilometres or one mile. In a board transportation policy review it was noted that some students “had the privilege†of transportation despite the fact they weren’t eligi- ble. “The way the parents see it is that it comes down to money,†said Asadoorian. Asadoorian says his group doesn’t hold a grudge against trustees but believes people in general are unhappy with these forced board cutbacks and as such, has sent copy of the group’s letter and petition to Halton MPP Barb Sullivan. He believes the issue boils down to safety. “If you can’t go to work know- ing your children have safely arrived at school, what’s the point in going to work,†he said. Asadoorian’s group’s rational for maintaining the bus service revolves around safety and includes the following points: D the increase in residential trafï¬c in the area (including the number of inexperienced drivers attending Loyola); CT the speed of trafï¬c on both Monastery and Nottinghill Gate; [3 the recent sitings of individu- als lurking in and around the many trails that populate the Glen Abbey/St. Matthew’s area; D the large ravine on Monk’s Passage and adjacent wooded area; D the striking of a student while waiting to cross at the con- trolled crossing in front of the school; D and impassable sidewalks after heavy snowfalls. “As a young child walks from Greenbriar to St. Matthews, they must pass a minimum of 48 drive- ways,†the letter continues. “A lot of people are struggling with this. They’re putting a dollar value on the safety of our chil- dren,†said Asadoorian. Ward 4 trustee Bryan McIntyre, who has met with the parents as a group and is impressed with the organizational steps they've taken to date, said “based on what I’ve seen and heard, there are sufï¬cient safety concerns that the board should certainly review this.†McIntyre qualified this com- DEBBIE BADOWSKI, M.
