To reach the Elora Gorge, take Hwy. 401 west to the Hwy. 6 cutoff north to Guelph. Continue past Guelph and take the Elora Road Exit Just down the road from the Elora Gorge is the unique Elora Quarry Conservation Area. The main attracâ€" tion here is the oneâ€"hectare, manâ€" made limestone quarry swimming area and surrounding cliffs that rise up 12 metres from the water. This 32â€" hectare treeâ€"covered site is also popuâ€" lar for hiking and picnics. No jumping or diving is permitted in the quarry. There is fishing in both the river and a stocked trout pond, and more than 10 kilometres of hiking trails to enjoy. Numerous picnic areas, barbeâ€" ques, playing fields, and three creative playgrounds can be found throughout the park. This conservation area has 140 serviced and 260 unserviced campsites and is a very popular destiâ€" nation during the summer months. The conservation area consists of 134 hectares of gently rolling and rocky terrain, with lush evergreen forests. A oneâ€"hectare swimming lake and beach area with change rooms is located within the park, with paddleâ€" boat rentals available. At the main entrance gate, you can obtain a park tabloid and visitor‘s guide which details the facilities and trails available. Visitors are cautioned to remain on the designated trail paths and to not lean over the edges, as the gorge is both steep and deep throughâ€" out its length. Small children should be wellâ€"supervised at all times. The gorge has a sheer drop of more than 20 metres (70 ft.) from the rim to the rocks and river below. Along the scenic hiking trails, you can view the massive Islet Rock perched in the middle of an open waterfall and see the large cave formation called the "Hole in the Rock." There are also numerous overhanging rock ledges and small caves between the walls of the gorge. Several scenic lookouts are provided along the gorge rim trails, with constructed safety barriers. Now that spring has arrived, why not plan an outing to one of the more scenic spots in Ontario â€" the beautiful Elora Gorge. This conservation area is located at the junction of the Grand and Irvine Rivers, about 20 kilometres north of the City of Guelph. You will be amazed by some of the most specâ€" tacular rock formations in the Niagara Peninsula. Elora Gorge spectacular spot for weekend visit on the left.
